KlezSka, NYC, Nov 20
On Thursday, November 20th the group Klezska! will be performing at Satalla - 37 West 26th Street in NY City (between 6th & Broadway). The show begins at 8PM and there is a $15 cover charge.
Klezska! is a newly-formed group that dedicates itself to the preservation of the old-school style of Ska popularized by the Skatalites. This ten-piece ensemble which includes a five-piece horn section, combines Klezmer and Jewish melodies with the traditional style of the Ska music.
This concert is a tribute to one of the founders of the Ska music. Roland Alphonso was one of the most prolific composers in Jamaican history and his tenor, soprano and flute playing was unequaled. This night marks the 5th anniversary of his passing and Klezska would like to dedicate the evening to Roland's memory and music.
Klezska will be joined by several guest musicians as they perform many of the old Skatalites compositions from the 1960's composed by Roland and fellow Skatalite Don Drummond (trombone). These songs will include: Guns of Navarone, Man in the Street, Eastern Standard Time, Ringo, Confucious, Garden of Love, Four Corners and the James Bond Theme.
