Shirim Klezmer Orchestra will make a rare local appearance at the Center for Arts in Natick, 14 Summer St., Natick on August 26 at 8:00pm. Shirim will be performing from their upcoming recording, "Mayse (Tales)" to be released in the fall. The CD and the concert will capture the rocking exuberance and soulful bittersweet quality of a Eastern European Jewish wedding party.
Shirim Klezmer Orchestra has become a Boston institution over the last 20 years performing the centuries old folk music of Jewish Eastern Europe. The band has toured in the US, Canada and Europe and is recognized for its rocking spirit, its high level of musicianship and its creativity with the music. Shirim is known for the hit crossover album, "Klezmer Nutcracker" (CD on Newport Classic) and a collaboration with Public Radio's Sound & Spirit host, Ellen Kushner, on their Hannukah special, "The Golden Dreydl" (CD on Rykodisc). Shirim is featured on the soundtrack of Woody Allen's "Deconstructing Harry." The band has collaborated with award-winning children's author, Maurice Sendak, on a Jewish version of Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf, " now called "Pincus and the Pig" (to be released on CD in the October by Tzadik).
