Rashanim is a trio of guitar, bass and drums/percussion drawing on influences including Jewish melodies, indie rock, punk, and "downtown" jazz. The 'Jewish power trio' is anchored by Shanir Blumenkranz (Satlah, Lemon Juice Quartet, Pharaoh's Daughter) on bass, and Mathias Kunzli (Mecca Bodega, George Garzone) on drums and percussion. The band gets its name from the noisemakers used during the Jewish holiday of Purim.
Rashanim's debut was released in 2003 on John Zorn's Tzadik Records, and the trio has been included on several Tzadik Compilations. Rashanim's guitarist/leader Jon Madof has performed with John Zorn, Marc Ribot, Frank London and many others on the New York scene.
