Gottesman, a longtime resident of the Bronx, recently received a 2005 National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, DC. This is the highest honor that the federal government bestows upon folk and traditional artists. Born in Vienna and raised in Czernowitz, Romania, she came to New York in 1951 and has been active in all aspects of Yiddish culture throughout her time here. She has published books and CDs of her poetry and songs, and her song Harbstlid (Autumn Song) has become an anthem of the recent Yiddish cultural revival. In 1998, Gottesman was inducted into the New York City City Lore Hall Peoples Hall of Fame.
The Congress for Jewish Culture is a 57-year-old organization dedicated to promoting Yiddish culture in America and throughout the world.
