This addition of Spiel, our regular chat show on the best in current Jewish culture, zooms in on funny business and the business of funny. Our host for the evening will be Dan Patterson, creator and producer of Who’s Line is it Anyway. His guests include the actress Miriam Margolyes, Oona King, broadcaster and former MP and Ryan Craig winner of the 2005 Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright.
We will be looking at ‘Caroline or Change’ at the National Theatre. Fresh from its sold out Broadway run, Caroline or Change explores the relationship between a young Jewish boy and his black housekeeper during the civil rights struggle. We will also discuss ‘Sixty-Six’, a new film starring Helena Bonham-Carter about a boy whose bar mitzvah clashes with the 1966 world cup final. We’ll look through a Jewish lens at Sasha Baron-Cohen’s latest offering for the silver screen, ‘Borat: Cultural Learnings of America to make Glorious the Nation of Kazakstan’. Plus David Schneider will give us a sneak preview from his new play, ‘Making Stalin Laugh’.
As always, there will be music in the bar from DJ Max Reinhardt.
