Fresh from their first international gig (Buffalo, New York), the Sisters of Sheynville, Toronto's premier all-female swing-klez band, are back to liven up the season with two Toronto dates: November 26, at the Trane, and December 10, at the Rex (details below). The band is currently recording its anxiously awaited debut CD, produced by Beyond The Pale's Eric Stein. The disc will hit the stores in February, 2007.
Since their debut in April, 2005, the "wildly successful" (Lesley Mitchell-Clarke, the Wholenote Magazine)Sisters of Sheynville have amassed an impressive festival and club performance resume. The sextet has appeared at the Toronto Downtown Jazz, Distillery Jazz, Celebrate Toronto, Toronto City Roots, Winterfolk and Downsview Park festivals, the Rex Jazz Bar Hotel, Toronto Performing Arts Centre, Leah Posluns and Al Green Theatres, Lula Lounge, the Free Times Cafe and the Gladstone Hotel. The Sisters have been interviewed on Jazz FM, CIUT and CJTW, and their music has been heard also on CBC's Roots & Wings. The band's infectious sound, centered around 3-part harmonies, ranges from vintage Yiddish swing and klezmer to jazz, improvisation, and original material. The Sisters are Lenka Lichtenberg and Isabel Fryszberg (vocals), Fern Lindzon (piano, vocals), Lorie Wolf (drums), Kinneret Sagee (clarinet), and Rachel Melas (bass).
