Soviet Yiddish Writers Memorial Program
Workmen's Circle building, 1762 Beacon St., Brookline, MA
2:00pm – 4:00pm
The Yiddish committee invites you to join us as we commemorate the 55th anniversary of Stalin’s murderous assault on Yiddish culture in the Soviet Union. We will read from the works of a number of leading Yiddish writers who were arrested, tried secretly on trumped-up charges of treason and finally executed by firing squad on August 12, 1952. Most readings will be in Yiddish but wherever possible, we will provide English and Russian translations. The musical portion of the program will feature klezmer clarinetist, Dena Ressler.
The musical portion also includes Elka (Ellie) Kelman, Yiddish instructor at Brandeis, who is in possession of a fine voice, singing songs of Kulbak and Izi Kharik. Ressler will deliver a short bio of the latter (af yidish with English translation) and try to read a couple of his poems. And she will play.
