… Midday heat will give way to evening coolness soon. The golden rays of the setting sun exposing the glistening dust in the air stirred up by horse-drawn carriages with enchanting music flowing through your window with the smell of blossoming acacia…. Do you hear it? That is Stempenju, the fiddler well-known in neighboring townships. He will play for you, just ask him. What would you like to order, joy or melancholy in exchange for the small coin or kind words? You’ll definitely find the kind words because his violin speaks to you in the language of your soul…
After a short engagement at the Toronto Jewish Film Festival two years ago Ferenc Javori the founder, composer and musical director of the Budapest Klezmer Band is now back in Toronto with his seven piece band and two singers to entertain the Canadian audiences.
The Budapest Klezmer Band is an extraordinary group of musicians. The band was formed in 1990 in the heart of Europe - in Hungary. Their creativity is a breathtaking, thrilling experiment in the field of Jewish folk music. Folk music is a perception of a nation's soul, which creates it. Klezmer music is a song of the Jewish soul. It is an exuberant revelry, the lyricism of trivial evenings in Jewish townships. It is an ardent declaration of love, and a prayer about eternal life. Klezmer art had almost been eliminated during the years of the Second World War however, it now enjoys a new era of popularity as interesting as everything that is original.
The masterpieces of Jewish Folk Music in the interpretation of Ferenc Javori such as Tartar Dance, Le Chajem Rebbe, Yiddishe Blues, Yiddishe Tango, Bei Mir Bist Du Schejn and other famous songs from musicals like Fiddler On The Roof and Bridal Dance will be offered in this over two-hour magical performance at the George Weston Recital Hall at the Toronto Centre For The Arts on Friday, May 8, 2009 - 7:30 PM.
The Budapest Klezmer Band has performed in over 25 countries worldwide with over 300 performances of this program alone. For further information about the band visit: www.budapestklezmer.hu/english.asp
