In his first Winnipeg appearance award-winning author, radio & record producer and four-time Grammy award nominee Henry “Hank” Sapoznik presents the lecture; Mamas, Yentes and Khazntes: Women in Yiddish Popular Culture. A pioneering scholar and performer of klezmer music, he founded KlezKamp: The Yiddish Folk Arts Program in 1985. He co-produced the ten-part series the Yiddish Radio Project for National Public Radio's All Things Considered in the spring of 2002 which won the prestigious Peabody Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism the same year he was nominated for an Emmy for his music score to the biographical documentary The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg. Following the success of the first Mameloshen Festival in 2008, The Rady Jewish Community Centre and The I.L. Peretz Folk School Endowment Trust are pleased to present this unique series which celebrates the richness of Yiddish and Jewish culture by featuring local and out-of-town performers. Mameloshen: Festival of Yiddish Entertainment and Culture will run weekly from May 4 to May 25 paying homage to the beauty and history of Yiddish with new and exciting performances while introducing audiences to the diversity of Jewish culture. All performances will take place at the Muriel Richardson Auditorium, Winnipeg Art Gallery.
