Pro Musica Hebraica - Glanville, Knapp, Washington, DC, 10 Feb 2011
Tickets are on sale now for the American premiere of an extraordinary song cycle:
“A Yiddish Winterreise: Elegy for a Vanished World”
Thursday, February 10, 2011 at 7:30 PM
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, D.C.
Don't miss out on the chance to hear acclaimed musicians Mark Glanville (bass-baritone) and Alexander Knapp (piano) present what music critic Raymond Fischer called “a performance to remember for a lifetime.”
Join us as well for a free pre-concert lecture by Pro Musica Hebraica scholar James Loeffler:
“Not your grandfather's Yiddish: the sublime art of the Yiddish song.”
(6:00 PM, North Atrium Foyer - Roof Terrace Level)
In his talk, Dr. Loeffler will explain the enigmatic origins and distinctive artistry of Yiddish folk songs. Using examples from the evening concert’s repertoire, he’ll answer such questions as whether all Yiddish songs are actually in minor key and why the great Russian composers all used Jewish melodies in their works.
