The historic Stanton Street Shul is at once a vivid example of the past and the joyful scene of vibrant Jewish life today. Our 98-year-old building — the sole surviving Eastern European “tenement shul” on the Lower East Side — is home to a rare set of
mazelot (zodiac murals) and is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places. Our members and leaders are young and older, diverse and enthusiastic. It’s a warm, welcoming place. It’s at Stanton Street that our honorees, Rebecca
(Rivky) and David Friedman, met and fell in love. Their passionate support of the shul, generosity and friendliness, creativity and willingness to help where help is needed exemplifies the spirit of the Shul.
Steve Reich, hailed as one of the world’s great composers, is a Pulitzer Prize and Praemium Imperiale laureate, to name but a few honors. Dubbed “cello goddess” by The New Yorker, soloist Maya Beiser has created a new repertoire for her instrument,
commissioning and performing new works by leading contemporary composers.
