Hanukkah celebration, Slocan Lake, BC, Canada, 2 Dec 2013

You and yours are invited to an evening of music, theater and dancing
Celebrating Hanukkah at the Silverton Gallery
Tuesday, December 3rd
Stage show with The Nelson Hanukkah Ensemble 7 pm, Community Dinner 6 pm

This year the Gallery staff is thrilled to present a four piece band with a great repertoire of highly dancable Jewish music, including Klezmer, Sephardic and Israeli songs.

This group of musicians are among the top players in the Kootenays!

Clarinetist Nicola Everton was with the Vancouver Symphony for twenty years, and has done extensive recording and touring. She is now Artistic Director of the Kootenay Gallery Concert Series, and has taught at the Valhalla Summer School of Music.

Bass player Rob Fahie is also an amazing player, having completed 2 degrees in Jazz and Classical music. He has toured internationally with high profile Canadian artists like Ranee Lee, Sophie Milman and Nikki Yanofsky. He has played at The Blue Note, Dizzy’s Club and Iridium in New York City as well as the Catalina Jazz Club, The Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall.

Accordionist Catherine McGrath is a well known folk musician and broadcaster in the West Kootenays. She was a founding member of Nelson's Heavy Shtetl, a klezmer and traditional jazz band, Cattle Annie, The Crooked Corral, a western swing group, and Kootenay Kontraband, an old-time dance band.

Singer Allan Merovitz is a legend in Canadian Klezmer circles. Allan, who is based in Calgary, has recorded and toured North America and Europe with top Klezmer and Yiddish groups, and has headed up his own band, KlezMerovitz. He has been nominated for a Juno, and won a CBC Etoiles-Galaxy award with his group Merovitz Project, in Montreal.

An experienced stage actor and storyteller, Allan will tell the story of the First Hanukkah in Canada, as experienced by Aaron Hart, an immigrant who fought with the British back in the 18th century, and then built a fur trading empire in Lower Canada.
Hanukkah celebrations are all about kids, and this year we have a group of young musicians who will perform a song or two
