We have been playing mainly from printed music, which we will have available in C and B-flat. All levels of players are welcome.
The WC is at 1762 Beacon St in Brookline, about 5 blocks west of Washington Square, which is about 12 blocks west of Coolidge Corner. The Green Line Beacon Street route goes right to the WC (just tell the conductor, "Ich gay in Arbeter Ring," and they'll know where to let you off).
We recommend a contribution of $5-$10, but no one should be kept away on account of money.
If you have your own list of people who might like to attend, please forward this to them.
The December jam will probably be held on Dec 14, since the Klezmatics are playing on Dec. 7 - keep tuned for definite date.

To Be Honored
October 7, 2003, New York The Workmen’s Circle/Arbeter Ring (WC/AR) will hold the second annual celebration of YIDDISH IN AMERICA on November 6th, 2003, at Town Hall, 123 West 43th Street, New York City, at 7:30pm The evening will celebrate the organization’s ongoing commitment to Jewish community, Yiddish language and culture, and a dedication to progressive values and social action.
The program will feature performances by Broadway and film stars including:
· Award winning Broadway and film star Lainie Kazan, who will emcee the evening,
· Judy Kaye, star of Mama Mia and many hits,
· Two time Tony award nominee Bruce Adler,
· Broadway and Yiddish theatre star Eleanor Reissa,
· Multi-talented performer Joanne Borts,
· Internationally acclaimed Cantor Simon Spiro,
· Internationally acclaimed Yiddish song interpreter Adrienne Cooper,
· An all-star, all-female Klezmer band led by violin virtuoso Alicia Svigals. The band will feature virtuoso clarinetist Eileen Stahl of the Klezmer Conservatory Band, Susan Watts of Mikveh, Canadian jazz-piano star Marilyn Lerner and more.
· The New Yiddish Chorale, the New York City Labor Chorus and the Jewish People’s Philharmonic Chorus will join in a rousing finale to celebrate Yiddish.
YIDDISH IN AMERICA 2003 will also honor several outstanding individuals and one institution, all of which have embraced the passions and ideals of the Workmen’s Circle/Arbeter Ring:
John Sweeney, President of the AFL-CIO, and America’s preeminent labor leader, reflects the WC/AR’s historic partnership and identification with the American Labor Movement. Early in its history, The WC/AR drew its tens of thousands of immigrant members into the shelter of the unions and continues today in its support of the American labor movement.
Theodore Bikel, internationally acclaimed film, theatre, and recording artist, human rights activist, and an icon of Yiddish and international folk-music,
Motl Zelmanowicz, a Democratic Socialist leader and the current head of the Jewish Labor Bund, and a generous supporter of causes that perpetuate Yiddish language and culture and humanist, democratic values.
Also being honored for their crucial role in promoting and maintaining Jewish identity in America are:
Seena Stein, a prominent New York realtor, and active alumna of the WC/AR’s venerable Kinder Ring summer camp.
The West Side Yiddish Cultural School, NYC, which for eighteen years has served as a creative community force in progressive, secular Jewish education.
The Workmen’s Circle/Arbeter Ring is a national organization. They were instrumental in championing the integration of working class Jewish immigrants into American society, and leading the quest for economic and social justice. Since its inception at the turn of the last century, when ten Jewish immigrants gathered in a tenement flat on the New York’s Lower East Side, WC/AR has been at the forefront of efforts to sustain a vital Jewish future. Along with its social justice mission, the organization maintains a network of Yiddish schools, produces many free Yiddish musical events, supports Yiddish theater, and publishes countless volumes and journals, all with the intention of preserving the cultural legacy of East European Jewry for future generations.
Tickets for YIDDISH IN AMERICA are $250, $100, $50 and $36. They are currently available at the Town Hall Box Office, Ticketmaster, or at The Workmen’s Circle/Arbeter-Ring New York office 212-889-6800 x 301.

As part of our ongoing A Glezele Tey series, Sholem Berger will read from and discuss his recently published Yiddish translation of the Dr. Seuss classic, "The Cat in the Hat" with Celeste Sollod. "Di Kats der Payats" is the first official translation of any of Dr. Seuss's books into Yiddish. Erica Brody notes in her review:
"With his puckish grin, pert red bow-tie and ever-perky whiskers, the Cat in the Hat is once again on the prowl, ready to rescue children from the doldrums of drizzly afternoons. Thanks to Berger's translation, Di Kats der Payats makes his entrée into perfectly rhymed Yiddish and is likely to inspire warm, fuzzy feelings for the impish cat — and perhaps for Yiddish itself." - Forward, September 5, 2003.
A Glezele Tey will be presented on Saturday, November 8 at 7:00 p.m., at The Jewish Community Center in Manhattan (334 Amsterdam Avenue at West 76th Street).

Deborah Strauss (violin, accordion, vocals, dance) and Jeff Warschauer
(vocals, guitar, mandolin) are two of the most active and well-respected performers
and teachers in the international klezmer and Yiddish music scene. They were
long time members of the Klezmer Conservatory Band and have performed with
Itzhak Perlman on film and in concert.
The music program will be followed by Fred Margulies, who was a young boy of
11 the night of Kristallnacht. Mr. Margulies speaks extensively about his
experiences as the only survivor of his family.

Zalmen Mlotek, Executive Director of The Folksbiene Yiddish Theater and Musical Director of The New Yiddish Chorale, will be presenting "Jewish Musical Drama in the New Country," a concert of rarely-heard Yiddish music, on Tuesday, November 11th at the Jewish Theological Seminary. The concert will feature an 1882 Yiddish operetta as well as the NYC premiere of a Yiddish cantata. Tickets for the performance, which begins at 7 p.m., are $18 at the door.
All performances, which are to be held in the Feinberg Auditorium, will have simultaneous English translations on screen for the enjoyment of those who do not speak Yiddish. Remaining tickets at $18 can be purchased at the door only. To reserve tickets, phone (212) 213-2120. Further information is available at http://www.milkenarchive.org/events. The Jewish Theological Seminary is located at 3080 Broadway at 122nd Street.
The concert culminates the week-long International Conference and Festival heralding the 350th anniversary of American Jewry. The festival is presented by the Milken Archive of American Jewish Music and the JTS in cooperation with the Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, Commission on Synagogue Music of Reform Judaism, Zamir Choral Foundation and The National Foundation for Jewish Culture.
The program will feature a concert version of the first Yiddish operetta produced in America (in 1882), titled "The Witch," or "Di Bobeyakhne" (also known as "Di Kishefmakher") by playwright Abraham Goldfaden. The piece will be performed by The New Yiddish Chorale, New York's acclaimed Yiddish vocal ensemble, with actors and vocal soloists from the Yiddish stage. Performers in the concert version with the Chorale include: Joanne Borts, Broadway actress; Hy Wolfe, actor; Arianne Slack, soprano; Jake Feldman, tenor; and Reyna Schaechter, age 8.
The Chorale will also present the New York City premiere of Di Lererin Mire ("The Teacher Mire") a Ghetto Cantata by Vladimir Heifetz with text by Abraham Sutskever, to whom the performance is dedicated. Sutskever, one of the greatest living Yiddish poets, celebrated his 90th birthday in Tel Aviv this year. The work is a lasting memorial to a legendary and idealistic schoolteacher, Mire Bernstein, who met her death in Majdanek when she stayed with her pupils in the Vilna Ghetto in September of 1941 rather than escape from the Nazis with the Partisans.
Soloists performing the Ghetto Cantata include Re'ut Ben Zev and Robert Abelson, both of whom are artists with the Milken Archive, and Susan Romalis of the Chorale. Also appearing will be Maurice Sklar, concert violinist. As an introduction to the second half of the concert, which includes the Ghetto Cantata, Adrienne Cooper will sing a song written in America by the noted Yiddish theater composer Alexander Olshanetsky (Belz, Ikh Hob Dikh Tsufil Lib). The songs pay homage to the nostalgic longing felt by immigrants for Vilna, the Jerusalem of Lithuania.

Perhaps best known as the trumpeter and vocalist of the Klezmatics, FRANK LONDON and LORIN SKLAMBERG have a creative electricity that has produced dozens of collaborative Yiddish musical, theatrical and film projects. From the haunting melodies of Jewish mystical songs on their recording The Zmiros Project to the playful tunes of their cooking/singing show Esn: Songs from the Kitchen, they are true innovators in the world of klezmer music. Now here is your chance to meet Frank London and Lorin Sklamberg up close and personal. Appearing for the first time in an intimate duo setting, they will perform nigunim and z'miros from their own collaborations as well as tunes from the Klezmatics repertoire. Whether you are a klezmer regular or looking for a taste of world music, the harmonies they weave with voice and trumpet will engage and enchant.

On Thursday, November 20th the group Klezska! will be performing at Satalla - 37 West 26th Street in NY City (between 6th & Broadway). The show begins at 8PM and there is a $15 cover charge.
Klezska! is a newly-formed group that dedicates itself to the preservation of the old-school style of Ska popularized by the Skatalites. This ten-piece ensemble which includes a five-piece horn section, combines Klezmer and Jewish melodies with the traditional style of the Ska music.
This concert is a tribute to one of the founders of the Ska music. Roland Alphonso was one of the most prolific composers in Jamaican history and his tenor, soprano and flute playing was unequaled. This night marks the 5th anniversary of his passing and Klezska would like to dedicate the evening to Roland's memory and music.
Klezska will be joined by several guest musicians as they perform many of the old Skatalites compositions from the 1960's composed by Roland and fellow Skatalite Don Drummond (trombone). These songs will include: Guns of Navarone, Man in the Street, Eastern Standard Time, Ringo, Confucious, Garden of Love, Four Corners and the James Bond Theme.
To learn more about the life and music of Roland Alphonso you can visit www.mp3.com/rolando where you will be treated to a wealth of his music and a more detailed hisoty of the life of this master musician.

Fiery, fearless, and stunningly modern, Yiddish poetry exploded onto
the
literary scene in the late nineteenth century and flourished throughout
the first half of the last century. In America, Europe, and later
Israel, Yiddish poets captured in luminous, and oftentimes bold and
experimental verse, the complex personal and communal struggles of life
in a rapidly changing world. Masters of language, they transformed
Yiddish into a powerful medium of poetic expression.
This program is funded, in part, by the Albert E. Marks Charitable
Trust
and the J.T. Zuckerman Fund of the Workmen's Circle.

Rivers of Babylon’s repertoire focuses on traditional folk songs and hymns from Sabbaths, festivals and the synagogue. These beautiful and sociable songs are sung in Hebrew, Aramaic and Arabic with a hint of Indian spice. The majority of the band originally met growing up in Bombay and cite this experience as a strong influence on their music - evident in their growing repertoire of vintage Bollywood songs from the 1940’s and 1950’s.
The group is led by Dr Sara Manasseh on drums and vocals. Sara is an ethnomusicologist and teacher of music who has extensively researched the musical traditions of the Jews of Iraq, in Bombay, Israel and the UK. Sara’s doctoral dissertation focused on Iraqi Jewish women in music performance during the twentieth century.
This performance will also feature original compositions from special guest Ehsan Aleman who specialises in playing the ‘oud, a traditional Middle Eastern lute. The rest of Rivers of Babylon comprise of a skilled erhu (Chinese two-string fiddle) player, a violinist, keyboards, a mandolin, tambourine and a whole host of superb singing!

The Golden Dreydl: a Klezmer Nutcracker
Ellen Kushner and Shirim Klezmer Orchestra
November 30, shows at 3:00pm & 5:30pm
Regattabar, Charles Hotel, Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA
$16 / kids under 12: $10.
Info & Tix: 617-876-7777, www.Concertix.com
"The Golden Dreydl: a Klezmer Nutcracker" at the Regattabar
WGBH "Sound & Spirit" radio host Ellen Kushner and the Shirim Klezmer Orchestra will perform their award-winning collaboration, "The Golden Dreydl: a Klezmer Nutcracker!" at the Regattabar (in the Charles Hotel, Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA 617-876-7777) on November 30 at 3:00 and 5:30pm. Tickets are $14 (adults), $8 (seniors & kids).
"The Golden Dreydl: a Klezmer Nutcracker!" is a Chanukah-inspired fantasy-adventure tale: 'Tchaikovsky meets Harry Potter and they go to a Jewish wedding! Kushner's enchanting storytelling is woven into a live musical performance of Shirim's ingenious klezmer adaptations of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite. The whole family will enjoy this multifaceted performance: a new twist on an old favorite. It is available on CD by Rykodisc and has won radio’s prestigious Gracie Allen Award.
Ellen Kushner writes and hosts the nationally distributed PRI show "Sound & Spirit" and is also an award-winning fantasy writer with three novels to her credit: Swordspoint: A Melodrama of Manners, Thomas the Rhymer, and (with Delia Shkerman) The Fall of the Kings, just published by Bantam Books. "Sound & Spirit" is heard on over 100 stations nationwide, and 89.7 FM WGBH Radio on Sundays at 5:00 p.m.
Shirim Klezmer Orchestra has released five recordings, including their crossover hit "Klezmer Nutcracker" on Newport Classic. They were featured on the soundtrack of Woody Allen’s "Deconstructing Harry" and have toured in North America and Europe.
"We wanted to create a new holiday story rich in Jewish themes and values, drawing on Jewish folklore and ethics,"
-Ellen Kushner ("Sound & Spirit")
"Shirim's Klezmer Nutcracker sounds utterly natural and totally compelling. Klezmer devotees will rejoice at the fresh stock of great tunes, and classical fans so far immune to the Russian composer's populist favorite
should find themselves swooning. Shirim's genre-crossing conception is a delight and its playing a joy.
-Billboard Magazine (Critics Choice)
"The Golden Dreydl makes an archetypal Christmas experience into a rollicking adventure tale for Jewish children -- and their beleaguered parents.. The klezmer-ized melodies are only the start, as Kushner and Shirim transform the various acts of the popular ballet into an empowering story for youngsters. No satire or mere parody, The Golden Dreydl is more like a message from an alternative holiday world, one that Jewish parents and klezmer fans will be delighted to receive." Mark Schwartz, BarnesandNoble.com
