SoCalled & FRANK LONDON
- Freeform Hip Hop Gypsy Klezmer jam with Klezmatics trumpeter Frank
London and Hip-Hop Khassene's DJ SoCalled. The brotherhood of
bass-tastic brass-tactic boombastics, down to brass tack-tics.
Eastern-European Klezmer techno jam: come shake your booty to a brass
band getting Beat up.
- Guests Aaron Alexander, Ori Kaplan, Ron Caswell, and more...
Alex Lubet writes to the Jewish-music list:
If you're anywhere near the Twin Cities, you may want to check out my
next gig 12/3, 730 pm, at Beth Jacob Synagogue in Mendota Heights, a
performance with my long-time collaborator, dancer/choreographer Judith
Brin-Ingber. I'll be doing my Ani Maamin and Maoz Tzur for guitar and
Shabbat Ha-Malkah for bass. Together, J and I will perform Hannelore
and our newest collaboration, Footnotes. Judith will perform Bari
Simone and Sarah, the latter featuring vocalist Amy (Yes, she's Jewish!)
Olson.
Most of the program is a tribute to Jewish women, a project-in-progress
that will eventually include exclusively original repertoire devoted to
our moms, sisters, partners, and female friends. Proud to say that the
dude of the duo came up with the idea (while watching a Seinfeld rerun
and getting tired of the way Jews are depicted in American pop culture
exclusively as something less than we are, a position I think hurts
women even more than men).

LIVE CONCERT + COMMUNITY EVENT + DJ MEDICINEMAN + ROULETTES DANCE + DANCE CLASS + SHISHA LOUNGE
On November 5, Lula Lounge & David Buchbinder inaugurated "Feast of the East," an unprecedented series of Wednesday night dance parties that feature funked-up dance rhythms from Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
Drawing on the music of the Jews, Arabs, Greeks and Roma, the sound of Feast of the East is the sound of radical roots: traditional, yet filtered through the prism of Toronto, a rainbow of the world’s richest colours. Feast of the East dance-music hybrid features numerous local jazz luminaries and a plethora of globally-grounded musical friends. Feast of the East harmonious intoxication presents a challenge to all those who delight in dance . Join us for our first step into Feast of the East - if you are not moved to dance, we’ll refund your cover charge!
Feast of the East is built around ensembles led by trumpeter and composer David Buchbinder, including the expanded, dance version of his Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band (Eastern European Jewish fusion music), Buchbinder’s Brass (Roma dance music) & Medina (Arabic music), as well as hot world music band Maza Meze performing Greek & Arabic dance music. Feast… will be dedicated to creating not only one of the hottest dance parties in Toronto but a complete event, with visual and olfactory delights to accompany the expected auditory awesomeness.
In addition to the music Feast of the East will feature: The Roulettes-awesomely hip Bellydance troupe led by Roula Said ~ Dance lessons in Jewish, Balkan & Arabic dance ~ the Belly-a-Go-Go pillar dancers ~ the Shisha Smoking Lounge (authentic Middle Eastern hookah experience)
Musicians (for the first two events) include: David Buchbinder, Dave Wall, Marilyn Lerner, Andrew Downing, Daniel Barnes, Bob Stevenson, John Johnson, Stephen Donald, Levon Ickhanian, William Carn, Debashis Sinha, Rick Shadrach Lazar, Mai Kelly, Jeff Wilson, Robert Botos ; Maryem Tollar, Ernie Tollar, Sophia Gregoriadas, Jennifer Moore, Debashis Sinha, , Jayne Brown, John Gzowski Brenna McCrimmon
Toronto DJ MEDICINEMAN is known for his adventurous blends of musical styles and sonic landscapes. For the past two years he has hosted 'No Man's Land' on CIUT radio and has earned a reputation for his on-going exploration into the evolution of world music. His sets flow from soothing ancient rhythms and textures through rippling primitive and progressive beats, always challenging musical boundaries and traditions.

KLEZMER ON FISH STREET (2003) AND THE KLEZMANIACS:
Presented by Acton-Concord Area Hadassah and Kerem Shalom of Concord, MA
The Acton-Concord Area Hadassah Chapter and Kerem Shalom of Concord, MA will
be presenting the Boston premiere of the film, Klezmer on Fish Street, along
with live Klezmer music from the featured Klezmaniacs. The film and concert
will be held on Sunday, December 14, 2003, from 3:00-5:30pm, at Kerem Shalom.
The recently released Klezmer on Fish Street views Poland through the eyes of
a group of young, Jewish American Klezmer musicians, The Klezmaniacs. They
encounter a Poland that includes both new Polish Jews and non-Jewish Poles,
along with the growth of Jewish culture produced by non-Jews. This poignant
documentary asks the questions: What is driving the revitalization of Jewish
life in Poland today? Is this reality, or a virtual Jewish reality? Klezmer
on Fish Street is the winner of the Special Jury Selection 2003 Palm Beach
International Film Fest.
After the film, the The Klezmaniacs will discuss the film and perform a live
Klezmer concert. Refreshments will follow. Admission is $10.00 for all
Hadassah and Kerem Shalom members; $15.00 for non-members. Send checks
payable to Acton-Concord Area Hadassah, along with a self-addressed stamped
envelope, to Kerem Shalom, P. O. Box 1646, Concord, MA 01742. Limited tickets
will be available the day of the program.

mixologist” DJ Socalled. Working turntables, drum machines, accordion,
piano and vocals (yes, all at once), Socalled mixes strains of jazz, funk
and everything else with klezmer, the music he calls home. Sampling
hip hop beats, old Yiddish vaudeville, and bits of klezmer clarinet, he
crafts soundscapes of unexpected world’s colliding for a shtetl-fabulous
early khanike (Hanuka in Yiddish) dance party.
Socalled is joined by LA musicians from Critical Brass Band, and Ancestry

For most of its 33 years of existence the St. Louis Circle of Jewish Music has sponsored an annual Chanukah choral festival. This year we begin a new tradition in collaboration with the suburban University City Symphony Orchestra - a "Judas Maccabeus" sing-along. Taking place (this year) at United Hebrew Congregation on December 20th, the combined choirs of most of the city's Jewish congregations will collaborate with the Orchestra, directed by Dr. Leon Burke, III, with solos sung by members of the Circle. Audience members may purchase a score for $18 which serves as a ticket for this and all future years, and then may sing along with the on-bima choir.
In researching the program notes I've become further surprised at the story of Handel's writing such a Jewish oratorio. "Messiah" notwithstanding, the vast majority of Handel's oratorios are on subjects from Tanach - "Old Testament" to him - "Deborah," "Israel in Egypt," "Joseph and His Brethren," etc. And "Judas Maccabeus" goes even one step further by NOT being of O.T. provenance, and hence lacking even that relevance for Christians. Apparently there was a political metaphor - a recently suppressed revolution. But I prefer the apocryphal story that Handel was advised to compose for royalty and the aristocracy, but wanted to see seats filled in the theater, and so wrote for the Jews.

Once again, we return to Caffé Lena in Saratoga Springs, NY for the second night of Chanukah. As usual, our concert will be a mix of the familiar and the never heard before in Saratoga-- songs and instrumental music,-- including an updated Yiddish vaudeville song about the corrupting effects of money, and its antidote--a traditional Yiddish song about the values without which money is useless. Subtitles will be provided for audience members not fluent in Yiddish.

Hip Hop Hoodíos
Dec. 31 - Montclair, NJ - First Night (New
Year’s show)
The upcoming New Year’s Eve and Jan. 3rd concerts from Latino-Jewish urban music collective Hip Hop Hoodíos promise lots of booty-shaking and laughs alike. Comprised of bilingual musicians from Jewish/Latino backgrounds ("hoodÌo is a twist on the word "judio" - Spanish for "Jew"), the members of Hip Hop HoodÌos are linked by a common love for Latin alternative music, or rock and rap "en Espanol". But don't call these guys the Jewish answer to Tenacious D or the Latino respuesta to the Beastie Boys: Hip Hop Hoodíos are out to change the notions and preconceptions of Latin music entirely. Following the group’s recent standing room-only concerts at Joe’s Pub and the Brooklyn Academy of Music (as well as packed dates in Chicago and LA), Los Hoodios perform at Makor in NYC on Saturday, Jan. 3rd, and also have a special New Year’s Eve date at First Night Montclair in New Jersey.
