Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY

Visiting guest recital by world-renowned klezmer violinist Steven Greenman and tsimbl (cimbalom / hammered dulcimer) player Pete Rushefsky playing a program of original and rarely heard klezmer pieces.

STEVEN GREENMAN

Violinist

Recognized internationally as one of the finest practitioners of traditional East European Jewish Klezmer violin, Steven Greenman is a seasoned performer of "Klezmer" music as well as a serious composer of traditional Klezmer music, a teacher, musical arranger and lecturer. His current project, "The Dream of Stempenyu" involves a CD recording of his own original Jewish and Klezmer violin compositions, a series of concerts of the music and a future publication of the material. One of the first American born klezmer violinists to create a program and performance style based entirely on the repertoire of European Klezmer violin music, Steven co-founded the Khevrisa ensemble together with the cimbalist, Walter Zev Feldman in 1998. Steven has performed internationally with Khevrisa and other notable klezmer ensembles such as the Klezmatics, Budowitz, the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band and Kapelye. His own ensemble, the Steven Greenman Klezmer Ensemble is dedicated to performing his own compositions and the transitional Jewish/Moldavian Klezmer repertoire.

As a teacher of Klezmer music Steven received a grant to be the first recipient of the Louis E. Emsheimer Memorial Artist in Residence Program in Cleveland, Ohio (2002) for which he lead Klezmer workshops for classical string players and lectured on Klezmer music. He has taught Klezmer violin and led string ensembles at the KlezKanada festival, Living Traditions’ KlezKamp, and KlezFest London. Working with educators Mitchell Korn and Amy McClellan of the Cleveland Orchestra educational department’s "Learning Through Music" program Steven was selected as a "Teaching Artist" and developed a children’s program combining story telling and klezmer music.

Steven has collaborated with New York dancer/choreographer David Dorfman and the Cleveland State Dance ensemble as musical director in Dorfman’s "Moving Histories", a modern dance piece dealing with Jewish identity, and performed with members of the Klezmatics in their 1997 performance of Tony Kushner’s adaptation of S. Ansky’s "Dybbuk." Steven has lectured and performed at the Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow, Poland and has been a regular performer with various ensembles at Toronto’s Ashkenaz-A Festival of New Yiddish Culture.

In addition to his involvement with Klezmer music Steven is an accomplished performer of urban Gypsy violin styles, in particular, Hungarian "Nota", Romanian "Lautari" music and Slovak folk music. Steven has devoted his life to the study of these styles learning East-European violin style and ornamentation from professional Gypsy and folk musicians from Slovakia, Romania, the Ukraine and Hungary in addition to transcribing and arranging hundreds of tunes. As a concert soloist, Steven has been a regular guest soloist with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra performing his own arrangements of traditional East European Gypsy violin music. Steven will be featured on a forthcoming CD of urban Romanian Gypsy violin music together with the cimbalist, Alexander Fedoriouk. As a classical violinist Steven received both his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in Violin Performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music studying with Linda Sharon Cerone, Dr. Eugene Gratovich and the late Bernhard Goldshmidt. Steven has also performed as a member of the Canton and Akron Symphony Orchestras and has participated in the National Repertory Orchestra, the National Orchestral Institute and the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria.

Steven is lead performer, producer and the composer of the music of his upcoming Klezmer violin CD project, "The Dream of Stempenyu". Together with Walter Zev Feldman, Steven co-produced and is featured on the recording Khevrisa-European Klezmer Music on the Smithsonian Folkways label. Steven is also featured on the following recordings: Budowitz’ "Mother Tongue"; as violinist and musical producer/arranger with Yiddish vocalist Lori Cahan-Simon with "Songs My Bubbe Should Have Taught Me" (Vol. 1) and lead violinist on "Vessel of Song-The Music of Mikhl Gelbart". In addition Steven has recorded with Alicia Svigals and with "The Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band".

PETE RUSHEFSKY

Tsimblist

Pete Rushefsky (tsimbl) is a leading revivalist of the tsimbl, or Jewish hammered dulcimer. He performs with some of the finest practitioners of traditional Yiddish and klezmer music including Steven Greenman, Rebecca Kaplan, Joel Rubin and Alicia Svigals. He won much critical acclaim for his CD with violinist Elie Rosenblatt entitled "Tsimbl un Fidl: Klezmer Music for Hammered Dulcimer & Violin" (Hatikvah Music) and he appears with Michael Alpert and Deborah Strauss on Yiddish poet/songwriter Beyle Schaechter-Gottesman's CD "Af di gasn fun der shtot - On the Streets of the City" (Yiddishland Records). His upcoming Yiddishland Records release with Rebecca Kaplan is entitled "Oyf di vegelekh / On the Paths: Yiddish Songs with Tsimbl." Pete is also the author of a pioneering instructional book on adapting the American 5-string banjo for klezmer.

"Adventurous! Absolutely charming!"
--New York Post

"She's looking for far more than furniture. And she finds it, in her own ingenious way."
--Palm Beach Post

"A witty and playful journeyÖ both deeply committed and slyly ironic, DIVAN offers a glimpse into the richness of Yiddish folklore."
--Variety

"A fresh, touching, surprising, and thoroughly wonderful film. At once witty and profound, Divan documents a series of quests ñ for a special sofa, for remnants of a Jewish life in post-Holocaust Hungary, for a way to reconcile oneís life choices with parental expectationsÖ the longest journey of all turns out to be the one from Brooklyn to Manhattan."
--Dr. Barbara Kirshenblatt Gimblett, NYU

A Zeitgeist Films/Hartley Film Foundation Release

To reclaim an ancestral couch upon which Hasidic rabbis slept, Pearl Gluck travels from her Hasidic community in Brooklyn to her roots in Hungary. Along the way, she wrestles with the faith of her forbearers, their heartbreaking fate and extraordinary resilience, and finally, what it means to claim both oneís tradition and oneís independence.

Matisyahu, NYC, Mar 6

Some would say Purim is a Jewish holiday about a queen in Persia who saved the Jews of her kingdom from a violently egotistical prime minister. Others would say Purim is a holiday about the masks people wear and how to get behind them. We say, its one of our favorite holidays well worth celebrating in the traditional ways…

With music, dancing, and drinking.

Join JDub, Matisyahu, and Hazon for a Purim night on the lower east side. In the spirit of turning things on their head, we've got an unbelievable bill of things Jewish and Not-So with Hasidic Reggae Superstar Matisyahu, hip hop band Automato and Londonian-Bostonian MC Kabir.

Tickets are only available at the door, so come early, stay late, and drink till you don’t know the difference*.

Sat march 6, 9pm (Matisyahu at 11)

the mercury lounge / 217 e houston b/w ave a and 1st ave (F/V to 2nd Ave) / www.mercuryloungenyc.com

* This show is 21+, but please do not misconstrue this statement. JDub does not condone underage drinking or drinking until you pass out and (Gd forbid) are taken to the hospital to have your stomach pumped. No fun L. Rather, we celebrate with the commandment to drink “ad d’lo yada” – “until you don’t know the difference” – between the good, the bad, and the ugly…which for some of me, I mean us, is a bud light and a prune hamantashen.

Yoel Ben-Simhon didn’t set out to explore his roots. An Israeli born of Moroccan parentage, Mr. Ben-Simhon pursued his academic studies at the Mannes School of Music and received his MFA in music composition from Hunter College in 1998.

During his MA studies in music composition, he devoted himself to exploring the subject of Jewish music in Morocco and how it contributes to the heritage of Jewish communities in the countries of origin and in Israel itself.

It was not long before Ben-Simhon found himself learning to play the Oud, a Middle-Eastern relative of the guitar. Soon he began learning the classic songs of the Moroccan Jews, and with it, the Judeo-Arabic dialect they spoke as vernacular.

His musical journey led him to realize that Jewish music shares a great deal with its Arab and Berber cousins. After Mr. Ben-Simhon returned from his first trip to Morocco, he captured his Jewish Moroccan musical experience in Mediterranean Collage. Similar in structure to the Arab nueba, the work was scored for voice, violin, nay (Arabic flute), qanun (Arabic zither), oud (Arabic lute), piano, bass, darbuka (hand drum), riqq (tambourine) and duff (frame drum).

Yoel Ben-Simhon says, "Sultana was the name of my grandmother, a very inspirational figure in my life, who was born in Mogador, Morocco. As a verb, saltana means 'to dominate' or 'to govern' and of course sultana means Queen." Sultana also means 'sublime', the enjoyment communicated by a performer to the audience through the artistic and technical mastery of the instrument or voice.

The Sultana Ensemble performed in many music venues throughout the US. such as: United Nations General Assembly Hall, The Jewish Museum in Manhattan, Baltimore Jewish Federation, Princeton University, Hunter College of CUNY and many others.

He brings it to Chicago in mid-March with a pared down ensemble for 2 performances.

In a timely alliance, representatives from Arab and Jewish cultures will collaborate for a weekend of music and study when Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism hosts its annual Scholar-in-Residence weekend, March 12-14, 2004. The multi-dimensional program -- "Music From the Tent of Abraham" – will provide a unique opportunity for a Jewish congregation to welcome Arab musicians under its roof.

The program is sponsored by Lakeside Congregation, honoring Genesis at the Crossroads, a Chicago-based non-profit organization dedicated to bringing together Arab, Persian and Jewish communities through music and the arts. This weekend-long program includes:

* Saturday, March 13 – The Hamsa Concert, which includes the Arabic musical ensemble Trio Mizan playing together with a quartet from the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band. Trio Mizan specializes in classical music from Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia using Middle Eastern instruments such as the ‘ud and qanun. This Hamsa concert features Trio Mizan musicians Hicham Chami, Chicago Magazine’s "best exotic instrumentalist," alongside Yoel Ben-Simhon and Richard Jankowsky. The Maxwell Street Klezmer Band musicians perform a spirited style of music associated with Eastern European Jewish culture.

* Sunday, March 14 – An adult enrichment lecture led by ethnomusicologist and Fulbright Scholar Richard Jankowsky, entitled "Mutual Inflences; Arab and Jewish Music in North Africa."

Rabbi Isaac Serotta of Lakeside Congregation says, "This unique program helps us to see the similarities between Jews and Moslems, and opens doors to dialogue. In a world rife with destruction, I am pleased that Lakeside Congregation can join with Genesis at the Crossroads to be bonim -- builders of peace." Cantor Michael Davis adds, "A popular perception is that religion can create conflict between communities. This weekend will bring Jews and Arabs together to unify cultures through music and to celebrate our common heritage. The program offers a message of hope to the Jewish and Arab communities in Chicago and beyond."

"This event and other cross-cultural artistic collaborations can serve as catalysts for inter-ethnic dialogue and global understanding," says Wendy Sternberg, MD, founder and co-president of Genesis at the Crossroads.

The Strauss/Warschauer Duo brings together two internationally renowned musicians who are deeply committed to klezmer music and Yiddish song. Their performances are an integrated and intimate blend of songs, translations and instrumental music - grounded in tradition, yet thoroughly contemporary. They draw from klezmer, Yiddish, Hasidic and liturgical music and culture, adding their own original compositions and song settings. As they sing and play in shifting combinations of violin, guitar, mandolin and accordion, they create a dynamic atmosphere with an exceptional range of feeling – from delicate and refined to exuberant and foot-stomping.

Please note that Satalla requires a $10 food or beverage minimum in addition to the admission charge.

fellow in the Music Department at Cornell University. He is teaching
courses on Klezmer music and ethnomusicology, directing the Cornell

since it's inception in the late 1970's and early 1980's. He has
performed and written widely while helping to produce a film and
numerous recordings and special broadcasts on Klezmer and other Jewish
musical traditions. Cornell University will host a special residency
with members of the Joel Rubin Jewish Music Ensemble from 3/16-19/04.

The Ithaca College concert will include a performance by Joel Rubin

Rushefsky on tsimbl (an Eastern European Jewish hammered dulcimer) as

DEFINITELY NOT YOUR GRANDPARENTS' CHOIR

Making their Southern California debut, the Moscow Male Jewish Choir, "Hasidic Cappella" will perform at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills, Sunday, March 21st at 4:00pm. This extraordinary group of highly educated musicians, known for their vast range of musical styles, has been delighting audiences throughout Russia and Europe since their inception in 1991. Thanks to Cantor Peter Halpern and Temple Adat Elohim, audiences in Southern California will get their first chance to hear their engaging group.

Among the Choir's repertoire are compositions of world classics and songs of peoples of the world. Their range is enormous, expertly performing pees of classical Jewish liturgy to humorous American folk. They've even been known to toss in Temptations-like dance movements. It is this mix of seriousness and reverence that has captivated audience world-wide.

Consisting of all professional musicians, the Choir seeks to revitalize Jewish choral music, based on both the deep roots of ancient tradition and contemporary culture. They are particularly dedicated to giving a second chance to music from the 19th century from Eastern Europe and Western Russia that has been inaccessible since the 1917 revolution.

Well known throughout Russia and Europe, especially for their honored annual appearances at the Great Hall of the Moscow Tchaykowskiy Conservatory, Hasidic Cappella's appearances in Southern California is definitely not to be missed. General admission seats are only $25 ($18 for seniors and students). Premier seating and entrance to the champagne reception with the artists are only $45. For more information and tickets, call the Canyon Club 818-879-5016.

Naftule's Dream, Cambridge, MA, Mar 24

The church at the end of the alley, decent punk typeNaftule’s Dream CD Release Party for "Live in Florence" at Ryle’s March 24

Naftule’s Dream will celebrate the release of their latest CD, "Live in Florence" (Innova) with a performance at Ryle’s Jazz Club (212 Hampshire St., Cambridge, 617-876-9330, www.rylesjazz.com) on March 24, at 8:30p.m., tickets are $7. "Live in Florence" captures the Boston-based Naftule’s Dream before a packed house in Italy at the end of a European tour and documents the band’s intense live energy at its very best. Opening up the evening will be the eclectic guitar trio, Fat Little Bastard.(FLB).

"Naftule’s Dream has taken the fiery musical legacy of klezmer master Naftule Brandwein and mixed it into a burning cauldron of free-jazz, edgy rock and modern expressionism. It’s a music of urgent appeal; a beautiful abstraction grounded in tunes as familiar as a family gathering; a circus of rhythm, celebration and blues, where moods and timbres shift with kaleidoscopic abruptness," says jazz critic Howie Mandel in the CD’s liner notes.

The "deep emotional resonance" which marks their live performances has made them a must-see on the Boston scene and has won them converts on their travels through Europe as well as the strongholds of new music in New York and Chicago.

Naftule’s Dream features musicians from a diverse list of bands prominent on the local music scene including Brandon Seabrook (electric guitar) and Jim Gray (tuba), Michael McLaughlin (accordion), Gary Bohan(trumpet); Eric Rosenthal (drums), and bandleader/clarinetist Glenn Dickson.

"This is without a doubt the most startlingly original, audacious music I’ve heard…What else can you say about a band that combines klezmer music and free jazz with feedback guitar into an organic, fully realized whole? It’s a remarkable balancing act of discipline and unabashed noise, technical brilliance and a completely contrary punk/no-wave aesthetic... Imagine Albert Mangelsdorf, Ivo Papasov, Jimi Hendrix, and Ran Blake jamming with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band at a Hassidic wedding and you’ll get a piece of the idiosyncratic picture here." -Bill Milkowski, Jazz Times

Our debut was on a Sunday evening in March 1994,
when we played as part of John Zorn's
New Jewish Music Festival at CB's Gallery.
Our friend David Licht from the Klezmatics had heard we were
going into the studio, and suddenly we had this first public gig.
We were then a five-piece all-instrumental unit
known initially as
The Greater Metropolitan Klezmer Band...
Originally we featured the late, great Howie Leess on reeds
(though due to a car accident, we had a fabulous sub for Howie
our first few gigs, Greek clarinetist Lefthedis "Teddy" Bournias).
Today's Metro octet includes all four other founding members:
Ismail Butera on accordion and bendir,
Michael Hess on violin, ney flutes, and qanun zither,
Dave Hofstra on upright bass and tuba,
and drummer/leader Eve Sicular,
who have since been joined by
Pam Fleming (in '96) on trumpet/flugelhorn,
Deborah Karpel ('97) on vocals,
Debra Kreisberg (Isle of Klezbos & Metro '99/2000) clarinet/alto sax,
& Rick Faulkner (the new guy! since 2000) on trombone.

Come down and support Tonic giving us this special evening for the occasion,
it may be our only downtown nyc event this season.
Hope to see you soon.

4th Annual Jewish Choral Fest, Philadelphia, PA, Mar 28

Gratz College will host the 4th annual Delaware Valley Jewish Choral
Festival on Sunday, March 28. Sponsored by the Zamir Choral Foundation in
conjunction with Gratz and the Jewish choral community of the Delaware
Valley, the event is designed for lovers of Jewish music of all backgrounds.

For further information, contact the Tyson Music Department at Gratz
College, 215-635-7300, or e-mail ZamirFdn@aol.com

The program will begin at 2 p.m. with a "community sing" of choral
selections led by local conductors, with special guest, Binyumen Schaechter,
director of the Jewish People’s Philharmonic Chorus. Specializing in
Yiddish music, the choir has been performing continuously for more than 80
years, and will headline the evening concert that follows the day-long
event.

Schaechter will also lead two of the twelve workshops scheduled following
the community sing, on topics ranging from Yiddish humor in song to vocal
improvisation, conducting volunteer choirs and the relationship between
Jewish choral music and Broadway. Attendees will have the opportunity to
attend their choice of two hour-long sessions during the afternoon,
following which a light, Glatt Kosher buffet will be served.

In addition to the Jewish People’s Philharmonic Chorus, the evening program,
which begins at 7:30 p.m., will feature performances by the M'kor Shalom
Chorale of Cherry Hill, conducted by Cantor Anita Hochman, and by Nashirah,
a newly-formed, auditioned chorus conducted by Robert Ross.

Participants are encouraged to attend the full-day event, but an
afternoon-only option is available. Tickets for the concert, alone, may
also be purchased. Discounts are available for seniors and students.

Cantor Edward R. Fogel Memorial Concert, St. Louis, MO, Mar 28

The St. Louis Circle of Jewish Music will present its annual Cantor Edward R. Fogel Memorial Concert this coming Sunday afternoon, March 28th at 4:00 pm at B'nai El Congregation, 11411 North Outer Forty Drive in suburban St. Louis. Entitled "A Night at the Opera," it will contain solos and ensemble pieces from opera, operetta and even the movie of the same name, performed by the cantors, soloists, keyboard players and other musicians from most of the city's Reform and Conservative congregations.

Ed Fogel (zl) was hazzan of Congregation Shaare Emeth in St. Louis for many years. Born in Uzbekistan, he grew up in Toronto, and as a teenager hitch-hiked to New York to attend Hebrew Union College. He was hired by Congregation Shaare Emeth after graduation and ordination, and later earned a master's degree from St. Louis Conservatory of Music. He was a founding member of the St. Louis Circle of Jewish Music, and a past president of both the Circle and the American Conference of Cantors. In his long career he proved a versatile cantor, accompanying himself on the guitar, known as a comedian and as a teacher, he concertized and recorded extensively. He survived cancer in 1998, but passed away in 2002. Soon afterward the St. Louis Circle of Jewish Music voted to dedicate its annual spring concert to his memory.

The upcoming March 28th Psychosemitic Latin Mash-up from Latino-Jewish urban music collective Hip Hop Hoodios promises lots of booty-shaking and laughs alike. Comprised of bilingual musicians from Jewish/Latino backgrounds ("hoodio” is a twist on the word "judio" - Spanish for "Jew"), the members of Hip Hop Hoodios are linked by a common love for Latin alternative music, or rock and rap "en Espanol". But don't call these guys the Jewish answer to Tenacious D or the Latino respuesta to the Beastie Boys: Hip Hop Hoodíos are out to change the notions and preconceptions of Latin music entirely. Los Hoodios will be joined by two other like-minded acts that push the cross-genre envelope: LA’s Bayu expertly fuse world, Latin, Brazilian and funk elements, while Caramelize are four New Yorkers (two Chicanos and two African-American Jews) that perform songs of social justice, scorched love affairs, and abuelita’s recipe for the perfect flan.

Shalshelet
is a fresh new Jewish folk ensemble that has been wowing local audiences since their concert debut in November 2002. They feature graceful arrangements of new Jewish liturgical and inspirational music in Hebrew and English, influenced by traditional music from folk cultures around the world: all-original compositions by Cantor Terry Horowit and the group's founder and arranger, accordion virtuoso Wendy Morrison, with Marcia Bronstein on piano, Richard Seidel on cello and bass, and multi-instrumentalist David Julian Gray.

Klezcentricity
Is led by seminal klezmer revivalist David Julian Gray on clarinet, guitar, and vocals, with Wendy Morrison on accordion, and Richard Seidel on bass. Their interpretation of Klezmer and other traditional music, closely and not-so-closely related, is informed by David's scholarship and rock'n'roll heart, Wendy's dynamic sense of tradition and bassist Richard Seidel's unerring ear and solid rhythm. Their common love and respect for klezmer, with the tensions of their competing instincts, have produced in Klezcentricity one of the most exciting and creative ensembles working today.
