Micaela Leon & Paul Trueblood (MD)
directed by Lina Koutrakos

Written and performed by German-born singer and actress—Micaela Leon—this must-see 70-minute show will transport you to the roaring Berlin of the 1920's—a time of great political upheaval, decadence and creative adventure. While men were writing about modernism, women such as Marlene Dietrich, Valeska Gert and Anita Berber were pushing social boundaries—on stage and off. Recently described by Cabaret Hotline as '...amazing vocals and an equally amazing talent as actor...' Leon will introduce you to some of these dynamic women and reintroduces the music of Hollaender, Spoliansky, Eisler and Weill—works that were considered depraved or were destroyed by the Nazis.

Leon is accompanied by the musical director Paul Trueblood. Also born of German ancestry, Trueblood is an expert in the music of this era and has collaborated with one of the original "Weimar Girls"—Greta Keller—in 1970's New York. He has also performed songs by Weill, Hollaender, and others with Marianne Faithfull on her album—20th Century Blues.

The film, directed by award winning filmmaker Dan Katzir and produced by Ravit Markus, under the auspices of the Center for Jewish Culture and Creativity, is a must see film for anyone who loves theater:

Enter the funny, larger-than-life world of Yiddish Theater today through this powerful documentary film about the amazing woman who has kept the oldest running Yiddish Theater in America alive. Zypora Spaisman is a Holocaust survivor who conquers all hearts in her passion for art, life and Yiddish.

This heartwarming story of one unique woman's struggle portrays the fight of both an old art form to stay relevant and an old actress to find meaning and a stage in a society that worships youth.

Shot in real time in one of the coldest winters in New York, Zypora's theater has one week to raise funding to keep their show going. Many miracles occur during this week, but will they be enough to save this critically acclaimed Yiddish show?

First you put your knees together, close up tight,
Then you sway 'em to left, then you sway 'em to the right...
Step around the floor kind of nice and light, ...
Then you twis' around, and twis' around with all your might, ...
Style and Grace, Swing your foot way round, then bring it back,
Now that's what I call Ball-in the Jack.
Then you do the Eagle Rock with style and grace, ...
Swing your foot way'round then bring it back,
Now that's what I call Ballin' the Jack...

www.metropolitanklezmer.com/celluloid.html

Despite the taboo surrounding homosexuality, the topic was too intriguing to be left entirely out of the Yiddish motion picture. An exploration of lesbian & gay subtext in Yiddish cinema during its heyday, from the 1920's to the outbreak of World War II, reveals distinctly Jewish concerns of the time intertwined with a striking array of allusions to this highly-charged subject. Lectures will be accompanied by clips from selected films and period home movies, plus related archival surprises. Ms. Sicular has published widely and lectured throughout North America and Europe on Yiddish and Soviet cinema, and was particularly inspired by the work of the late film scholar Vito Russo, author and presenter of the original Celluloid Closet.

The Village Temple, led by Rabbi Chava Koster and Cantor Kathy Barr, has served the Reform Jewish community in Greenwich Village and Lower Manhattan for almost 60 years, with a commitment to social justice. This event is part of the Rose and Adolph Alexander lecture, concert and film series, supported for the eighth consecutive year by Edward Krugman, in memory of his late wife Paula's parents.

Filmmaker/historian Eve Sicular has lectured throughout North America and Europe on Yiddish and Soviet cinema. A former curator of Film & Photography Archives at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, she has also worked for the Department of Film at New York's Museum of Modern Art on the series "Bridge of Light: Yiddish Film Between Two Worlds". She has published numerous articles and anthology essays on the subject of queer subtext in Yiddish cinema, as well as lecturing on this topic at film festivals, scholarly conferences, media centers and universities across North America and Europe.

In addition to her work as a film historian, Ms Sicular is drummer/leader of both Metropolitan Klezmer and the Isle of Klezbos sextet, and has produced their four award-winning CDs on Rhythm Media Records. A fifth audio CD with DVD tracks is currently in production. The bands have appeared in broadcasts on CNN "Worldbeat," PBS "In The Life," and the German network ARD's "Rhythms of New York," as well as on radio stations worldwide, in soundtracks and soundscapes from Showtime's "The L Word" to Off-Broadway to Covent Garden's Royal Ballet, and at concert halls, nightclubs, college campuses and music festivals internationally since 1994.

"Zun mit a regn", St. Petersburg, Russia, Oct 12

The Amsterdam Jewish Music Projects Foundation will be taking part in
the Russian Centennial Celebration for Dmitri Shostakovich with the
programme "Zun mit a regn" (Sun and Rain) that is to be performed at the
Shostakovich Conferences in St. Petersburg on 12 and 13 October. The
programme, which premiered in the Netherlands, includes chamber music and
songs composed by Shostakovich himself and by his friends Mieczyslaw
Weinberg and Veniamin Basner. The central source of inspiration for the
works on the programme is the music of the Jewish people, oppressed in
Russia during the Stalin regime. The works will be performed by singer
Sovali (soprano), violinist Grigory Sedukh, cellist Alexander Oratovski and
pianist Paul Prenen. The performances are supported by the Wilhelmina E.
Jansen Fund.

Concerts:
. 12 October 2006, 7 PM at the Composers Hall, St. Petersburg
. 13 October 2006, 4 PM at the N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov Museum Apartment (with
lecture by Julia Broido)

The complete program includes:
M. Weinberg, Jewish Songs, Op.13 (Y.L. Perets) (1943)
M. Weinberg, Sonata for Cello Solo, No.1, Op.72 (1960)
D. Shostakovich, Prelude and Fugue, Op.87, No.8 in F sharp minor for piano
(1950-51)
D. Shostakovich, "From Jewish Folk Poetry", Op.79, Nos.1, 3, 5, 7 (1948)
D. Shostakovich, Piano Trio No.2, Op. 67 (1944)
V. Basner, Poem for Violin and Piano, Op. 7, No.1
V. Basner, Songs from the musical "Jewish Luck", Op. 45 (1994)

From the reviews of previous performances in the Netherlands:

Eindhovens Dagblad: "Brilliant Yiddish lyricism!"

Enschede Synagogue: "The impressive programme went over very well with
the audience. Everyone found it fascinating to witness how original Jewish
music that was barely known, if at all, was brought back to life.."

Jan Roelofs' review of the concert at Museum 'De Buitenplaats' in Eelde:
"How does one describe atmosphere? Not with words like professional or
virtuoso, although they were certainly applicable. In any case, the
atmosphere of the concert was created by the Jewish sounds, the melancholy
and sometimes heartbreaking grief that could be heard, by the sounds and
rhythms that said, "I shall persevere and won't let them grind me down," by
the Yiddish lyrics translated so professionally they could almost be
followed word for word. Yet the atmosphere was of course predominantly
determined by (the musicians). In a beautifully structured programme of
songs and instrumental works (partly performed as solos), they exhibited
their professionalism, virtuosity and above all their pleasure in singing
and playing. The warm cello and violin sounds, the beautiful, supple and
agile voice and the pianist who conjured up a rich palette of sounds from
the grand piano, were important ingredients in the special atmosphere of
this concert.."

The DSCH Journal: "This was an unforgettable event in which the
musicians gave their all. Bravo!"

Dynamic, soulful, and often reaching feverish heights, the infectious sound of Les Yeux Noirs leaves audiences dancing in the aisles. Part of the series The Long Walk to Freedom.

"Blending funky gypsy undertones with old-school Eastern European folk, jazz, and classical influences, Les Yeux Noirs delivers an eclectic and electric set."—San Francisco Bay Times

Based on the Play by I.B. Singer
Conceived and Adapted by
Robert Brustein
Music by Hankus Netsky
Additional Music by Zalmen Mlotek
Lyrics by Arnold Weinstein
Directed by Nick Olcott

Featuring Amy McWilliams, Donna Migliaccio, Dan Manning,
Rob McQuay, Dwayne Nitz, Peter Gil, Tom Howley, Howard
Stregack, Max Talisman and Isabel Thompson

Brustein recreates one of the great stories of Chelm, the
village of fools, as a klezmer musical full of slapstick
comedy and zany characters. The council of Chelm decides
to appoint Shlemiel, a sexton in a synagogue, to spread
its dubious wisdom to another town. Tricked by the
mischievous Chaim Rascal into retracing his steps,
Shlemiel thinks he has discovered a duplicate Chelm and
another Ms. Shlemiel. His comic misadventures continue as
he commits adultery with his wife and tries to convince
the council that there are two Shlemiels! Hailed by
critics at Lincoln Center's Serious Fun! festival

"Zun mit a regn", St. Petersburg, Russia, Oct 13

Bravo!"

Pete Rushefsky (tsimbl-hammered dulcimer) and Michael Winograd (clarinet) present music of the so-called "Courtiers of Ashkenaz"... During the high classical period of Ashkenazia, composers in service to the supreme Sublime created a revolutionary canon synthesizing folk klezmer melodies, sophisticated Hebrew-Oriental modal excursions and syrtos from the courts of the Hellenic boyar overlords of Wallachia and Moldavia. This exploration of the oeuvre of the legendary Courtiers will cap the yontif season in a manner invoking UNESCO's "masterpieces of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity."

SCORE @ the South Bank Centre and the Jewish Community Centre for London
Purcell Room, South Bank Centre, London SE1 8XX
Price: £12 Call 08703 800 400 or online at www.rfh.org.uk

After a sold-out performance at the Everyman, Hampstead, in October 2005, SCORE returns to the South Bank Centre for one-night only.

Lemez Lovas of Oi Va Voi will direct guest musicians Moshikop and Rohan Kriwaczek in a live performance of a specially devised new score for East and West. In Sidney M. Goldin and Ivan Abramson’s silent movie (1923), streetwise New York flapper Mollie (Molly Picon) travels to her cousin’s wedding in a traditional Polish shtetl.

Lovas, Moshikop and Kriwaczek’s new score takes us from traditional klezmer to contemporary electronica, from vaudeville to breakbeat. As love blossoms between East and West, and the musical narrative unfolds, traditional and modern worlds are brought into collision. Score is irreverent and highly entertaining. A night not to be missed.

There will be an open rehearsal for students and young people in the day on 19th October. Please contact the JCC for more information.

JMF: Dr. Judith Cohen, NYC, Oct 20

THE JEWISH MUSIC FORUM 2006-2007
MUSIC, MEDIA AND MEMORY IN JEWISH LIFE

October 20, 2006 10:30AM-12PM
Music and Memory among Crypto-Jews in Portuguese Border Villages
Dr. Judith Cohen, York University
Dr. Cohen's ethnographic fieldwork of extant musical traditions in the area or northeastern Portugal is the focus of her presentation. Her findings are perhaps unprecedented, owing to the private nature of practices in this region. Cohen will discuss the ways in which music has preserved elements of post-cultural memory among descendants of the crypto-Jews who remained in the Spanish and Portuguese communities of Belmonte and Tras-os-Montes from the time of the Inquisitions.

With careful consideration for their privacy and the trust placed in her by her study subjects, Dr. Cohen will share with us the historical and ethnographic contexts of the communities discussed, the perceptions and myths that inspire the music in their lives, and the nature of assumptions made by others about what constitutes musical memory among members of these communities. Cohen also looks at how the performance of this music utilizes older memories, shared memories, and more recent memories in the construction of a regained Jewish identity.

The respondent will be Dr. Jane Gerber, an internationally-acclaimed expert on the history of Jews in the Iberian Peninsula and pioneer in the field of Sephardic studies.

This presentation is co-sponsored by the American Sephardi Federation ; New York's Center for Jewish History; and the CUNY Graduate Center's Jewish Studies program.

All seminars take place at 10:30 a.m. at the Center for Jewish History
15 West 16th Street, NYC

Event is free and open to the public.

Trio Klezmer på hjemmebane!
Oplev "Nussbaum - Smidl - Ougaard" LIVE
På selve scenen, hvor det hele startede :

Lørdag d. 21. oktober kl. 21:00 :
Kafcaféen, Skindergade 3, 1159 K
www.cafeteatret.dk

"The Celluloid Closet of Yiddish Film", Seattle, WA, Oct 22

"The Celluloid Closet of Yiddish Film" video clips/lecture
presented by Eve Sicular (of Metropolitan Klezmer & Isle of Klezbos)

Sunday, 10/22
2:00pm - 4:00pm
Seattle Public Library Central Branch, 1000 Fourth Avenue, Seattle WA
www.seattlequeerfilm.com/06/schedule.html

Seattle Queer Film Festival is produced by Three Dollar Bill Cinema.
This event is co-presented by The American Jewish Committee's Seattle Jewish Film Festival & Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle.

Daniel Pearl - the Wall Street Journal reporter who was kidnapped and murdered by terrorists in 2002 in Pakistan - was a classically trained violinist, an avid fiddler and a mandolin player who used his passion for music to form friendships across cultural and verbal divides. Danny lived a life that knew no geographical boundaries, with a spirit that knew no prejudice. He joined musical groups in every community in which he lived, leaving behind a long trail of musician-friends around the globe. Every year around his October 10th birthday, musicians around the world reach out in friendship to join in “Harmony for Humanity.”

Out of adversity, elegant and energetic new sounds in American black and Jewish popular music were born. Rooted in the gloomy ghettos of Eastern Europe, Jewish music underwent a transformation in twentieth century America. Jews brilliantly mixed traditions found in the synagogues, klezmer halls, and Yiddish theaters with the hot jazz and rhythms of their Harlem brothers and sisters to create a lush, extravagant new genre called swing. FROM SHTETL TO SWING is the story of how Lower East Side kids-turned-legends Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, the Marx Brothers, Artie Shaw, and numerous others forever changed the face of American popular music--from the Bowery to Tin Pan Alley to Broadway to Hollywood.
