Klezmokum, Groningen, the Netherlands, Jan 1, 2008

Starting on Satuday 17 November, Klezmokum will be touring Holland and in Belgium) with "Ancient & Newer Roots", a program of original works by Jewish composers dating back to the period around World War Two, now updated into contemporary comopositions. The works by Mikhl Gelbart, Kasriel Broydo, Beyle Schaechter Gottesman and others are in new arrangements by Burton Greene, pianist and leader of Klezmokum. The tour has been made possible by funding from Maror in Amsterdam and the Levi Lassen Foundation in The Hague. Most of the concerts will be at synagogues or other Jewish locations.

1 January 2008 New Year's Day Concert,
Synagogue in Groningen.
3--5PM,
Folkingestraat 60.

In addition to traditional Chassidic melodies, there are also modern works by Matt Darriau (Klezmatics) and Bill Averbach (Austin Klezmorim), and by Sylke Rollig/Burton Greene included in Burton's arrangements. Nine of the compositions have already been recorded on a CD (BVHAAST CD 1205). Klezmokum combines originally Jewish music with Jazz and spontaneous improvisations, resulting in surprising modern music that retains the original atmosphere.

Jerusalem-born jazz vocalist Ayelet Rose Gottlieb radiates a powerfully unique style, reminiscent of diverse influences – she grew up among stacks of vinyl that included Charles Mingus, Laurie Anderson, J.S. Bach, Bob Dylan, Edith Piaf and Egyptian chanteuse Oum Koultum.

Mayim Rabim, her ten-piece song cycle based on texts from the erotic biblical love poem Song of Songs, was released in June 2006 (Tzadik Records) to international critical acclaim. An epic story of love and loss in which each line of music, each player on stage is revealed as part of the complexity of a young woman caught in the great waters of love.

Gottlieb develops the piece into a multi-sensory theatrical presentation, layering music with deconstructed English translations and visuals.
MAYIM RABIM is based on the Song of Songs, ancient Hebrew erotica from King Solomon that is found in the Bible.

She composed the song cycle to 10 segments of the text and presents it in its original Hebrew. In Song of Songs, Ayelet found an incredible work of poetry about love, a human sentiment that surely incorporates the full color range of emotions.

“The elegance in this music is juxtaposed against the rawness of its sensuality. In Short, Mayim Rabim is a small wonder, a beautiful gem.” Billboard

“The stunning Gottlieb possesses a powerful voice, using it with authority, soaring over a beautifully voiced chorus of four.” JazzTimes

Israeli born composer Lior Navok gives voice to the unspeakable tragedies of the Holocaust. Continuing the powerful stream begun by Donald Sur s Slavery Documents and spurred on by T.J. Anderson, Navok s Slavery Documents 3: And the Trains Kept Coming … also takes its texts from primary source documents this time from Holocaust correspondence, including communications that implored the Allies to bomb the railroad tracks leading to the European death camps, transport train schedules, and scribbled notes wedged into the cracked walls of the barracks. Weill's thrilling The Prophets, from his colossal pageant The Eternal Road no less than the history of the Jewish people takes its inspiration from the prophecies of the Book of Jeremiah.

Yiddish Dance class, NYC, Jan 20, 2008

New Yiddish Dance Class at NY's 92 St. Y presented by Center for Traditional Music and Dance and the 92 St. Y.

CTMD announces a new partnership with Manhattan's 92 St Y to offer a series of Yiddish dance classes beginning in September led by Walter Zev Feldman and other master dance leaders.

Building on our monthly Tantshoyz (dance house) series at the JCC in Manhattan, the 92 St. Y classes will provide intermediate and advanced dancers with a more in-depth opportunity to explore classic Yiddish and coterritorial dances such as the sher, hora/zhok, freylekhs, honga, hora moldavaneasca and bulgar. Special focus will also be given to the expressive power and gestures of solo dance. Classes will feature live klezmer music performed by Jake Shulman-Ment on violin and Pete Rushefsky on tsimbl (hammered dulcimer).

Eight, three-hour sessions will be held on the following Sundays, from 2PM-5PM: September 30, October 21, November 18, January 20, February 17, March 30, April 27, and June 1. Cost for the series is $250 (interested participants must register for the entire series). To register or for more information, go to the 92nd St. Y website or call Pete Rushefsky at 212-571-1555 ext. 36 or email Pete.

And stay tuned for information about a new season of Tantshoyzen and a December 9 Symposium at NYU entitled Defining Yiddish Dance: Sacred, Secular, Borrowed and Transformed.

The Center for Traditional Music and Dance's Yiddish Dance Project is supported by the Forward Association, the New York State Council on the Arts Division of Folk Arts and public funds from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs.

SYMPHONY N° 4 in DO minor : The HOLOCAUST

This concert is the first performance of the symphony n° 4 in do minor The Holocaust composed by ALFONSO REGA .

The composer Alfonso Rega has been rewarded several times with the IBLA Prize at New York for his music; for the Symphony The Holocaust as well as for other Symphonies he composed.

THIS SYMPHONY HAS BEEN CONCEIVED AS HOMAGE IN MEMORY OF ALL THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVE AS VICTIMS OF THE HORROR OF ONE AMONG THE BIGGEST GENOCIDES IN HUMANKIND S HISTORY.

THE COMPOSER S INTENTION IS ALSO TO CONTRIBUTE THROUGH HIS MUSIC AN INTENSIFICATION OF WARNING FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS SO THAT NEVER MORE WILL IT HAPPEN.

The Symphony is divided in 6 movements which explain this tragedy:
1° The forced gatheringb 2° The travel 3° O! What a pain (The prison in camps)-
4° The Holocaust 5° Dream of spring 6° Liberation.

I am Italian. I live in Milano and I am 66 years old. I studied the piano during 8 years and composition from 1995. I composed 8 Symphonic Poems:
1° Birth of Davide 2° Birth of Myriam. 3° The Millennium- 4° The Holocaust
5° The Birth of the Universe - 6° The Divine Comedy-7° The 11 September.
8° Romeo and Juliet. Plus about 400 short peaces.
I took part in some music contests:
a) I won at Bologna with the 4th.Movement of the Symphonic 11 September
The Pietas for violin and in 2006 in New York with the Symphony The Holocaust

Maestro Rega, represents a unique case in the world of Italian and European classical music because he faces the difficult field of Symphony and he combines modern and classical types of music. He makes available to a broad spectrum of tastes the so called cultured music which he creates so well with understanding. (Quoting of a musical critic.)

Based on the classic Jewish play by S. Ansky, this new 3-Act opera
features renowned international artists, and combines music, drama,
dance, realtime video projections, and more. The world premiere of
this production will be held in Montreal at the Segal Centre for
Performing Arts. The Dybbuk has been often described as Romeo &
Juliet meets The Exorcist. Indeed, the play’s subtitle, Between Two
Worlds, indicates the duality, which is both the center and source of
the haunting drama of life vs. death, demonic vs. angelic, the
natural vs. the unnatural, the ancient customs vs. modernity. Channan
and Leah are betrothed to each other by their fathers even before
their birth. But the two are denied their fate when Leah’s father
breaks the marriage contract and offers his daughter to a richer man.
Chanan attempts through mysticism and magic to regain Leah, but
weakened from prolonged prayer and fasting, he dies and enters the
spirit world.

In this chamber opera, Ofer Ben-Amots characterizes the separate
realms of the two central characters by having Leah carry the vocal
role—singing, reciting, and acting—while the role of the other
main character, Channan, is performed wordlessly entirely on the
clarinet. In Hebrew and English.

Most scholars since World War Two have assumed that composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847) maintained a strong attachment to Judaism throughout his lifetime. As these commentators have rightly noted, Mendelssohn was born Jewish and did not convert to Protestantism until age seven, his grandfather was the famous Jewish reformer and philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, and his music was banned by the Nazis, who clearly viewed him as a Jew. Such facts tell only part of the story, however. Drawing on his recent research on Felix Mendelssohn and the Mendelssohn family, Sposato will explore new answers to the so-called Mendelssohn Jewish question.

Jeffrey S. Sposato is assistant professor of musicology at the Moores School of Music, University of Houston. He received a PhD in musicology from Brandeis University, an MM and BM in vocal performance from New England Conservatory, and a BA in German studies from Tufts University. His teaching and research interests include music of the classical and romantic periods, sacred music, choral music, and opera.

Sposato's most recent book, "The Price of Assimilation: Felix Mendelssohn and the Nineteenth-Century Anti-Semitic Tradition" (Oxford, 2006), was named a Choice Outstanding Academic Title for 2006 and a Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award finalist. His other publications include "William Thomas McKinley: A Bio-Bibliography" (Greenwood, 1995), as well as several articles on Mendelssohn and his times.

The prophetic visions of Ezekiel are some of the most fascinating and vivid of all ancient texts. The traditional melodies used to chant them in the synagogue have been with us for ages, and serve as the inspiration for saxophonist Greg Wall’s Later Prophets. Featuring master percussionist and long time collaborator Aaron Alexander, seriously grooving bassist David Richards, and keyboards phenom Shai Bachar, the quartet manages to simultaneously straddle the gates of the ancient and avant-garde, while creating a musical experience that is as timeless as the texts themselves.
