New Yiddish Dance Class at NY's 92 St. Y presented by Center for Traditional Music and Dance and the 92 St. Y.
CTMD announces a new partnership with Manhattan's 92 St Y to offer a series of Yiddish dance classes beginning in September led by Walter Zev Feldman and other master dance leaders.
Building on our monthly Tantshoyz (dance house) series at the JCC in Manhattan, the 92 St. Y classes will provide intermediate and advanced dancers with a more in-depth opportunity to explore classic Yiddish and coterritorial dances such as the sher, hora/zhok, freylekhs, honga, hora moldavaneasca and bulgar. Special focus will also be given to the expressive power and gestures of solo dance. Classes will feature live klezmer music performed by Jake Shulman-Ment on violin and Pete Rushefsky on tsimbl (hammered dulcimer).
Eight, three-hour sessions will be held on the following Sundays, from 2PM-5PM: September 30, October 21, November 18, January 20, February 17, March 30, April 27, and June 1. Cost for the series is $250 (interested participants must register for the entire series). To register or for more information, go to the 92nd St. Y website or call Pete Rushefsky at 212-571-1555 ext. 36 or email Pete.
And stay tuned for information about a new season of Tantshoyzen and a December 9 Symposium at NYU entitled Defining Yiddish Dance: Sacred, Secular, Borrowed and Transformed.
The Center for Traditional Music and Dance's Yiddish Dance Project is supported by the Forward Association, the New York State Council on the Arts Division of Folk Arts and public funds from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs.

Concerts with Zhok Therapy and Okbari
Saturday, June 14th, 8pm, $10
One Longfellow Square
Double bill featuring Zhok Therapy and Okbari
www.onelongfellowsquare.com or 761-1757 for tix and info
Two of Portland's most unusual and exciting bands, Zhok Therapy and
Okbari, will be featured in a double bill at One Longfellow Square on Friday, February 15th. Zhok Therapy performs traditional and new music with influences ranging from Balkan dance music to jazz. Okbari performs traditional Armenian and Turkish music. Zhok Therapy will also be performing a solo concert the following night at the Saco Coffeehouse.
Zhok Therapy is the unruly alter-ego of Maine's well-known klezmer band, the Casco Bay Tummlers. Zhok Therapy still has one toe in the klezmer tradition, but has expanded their repertoire to include Greek, Balkan, and Middle Eastern music. Adding further influences from jazz and blues, their deep grooves and improvisations are both innovative and well rooted in a rich and varied ethnicity. "Zhok Therapy will remedy whatever ails with their cross pollinations." The band will be joined by special guest Mark Tipton, on trumpet, for these two performances. Tipton is an immensely gifted improvisor and composer who has recently returned to Maine after a number of years in New York City. The other band members are: Carl Dimow, flutes and guitars, Steve Gruverman, clarinets and saxophone, Julie Goell, bass and vocals, Hayes Porterfield, percussion.
(A zhok, by the way, is a type of Jewish and Middle Eastern rhythm.)
Okbari performs Armenian and Anatolian folk music, as well as traditional folk and contemporary songs from the Greek, Arabic and Balkan traditons. Okbari is Amos Libby and Eric LaPerna. Libby is a dynamic performer on oud, (a middle eastern lute), and voice. LaPerna is a gifted and inspired percussionist. Okbari was formed in 1995 and has released four recordings. In this unique performance, Okbari will present a suite of Ottoman classical compositions along with Turkish and Armenian folk songs inspired by their recent journey to Turkey. Okbari will appear with special guest violinist Michael Gallant (of the late Alan Shavarsh Bardezbanian Middle East Ensemble.)

The 12th annual Chicago SummerDance series is organized and presented by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs. This summer the Spirit of Music Garden in Grant Park becomes a unique outdoor urban dance space – the largest of its kind in the United States.
The Maxwell Street Klezmer Band, founded in 1983, brings a kaleidoscope of colors and moods and an old-fashioned spirit of fun to their performance of traditional Jewish music. The combination of dance music, folk songs, theatre medleys and jazzy Yiddish pop music from the 1930's to the 1950's creates a rich, multi-dimensional experience of the lost world of Eastern European Jewish culture, combined with vignettes of America as seen through immigrant eyes. Audiences of all backgrounds are delighted by Maxwell Street's high-energy performances that glow with warmth and humor.

This Sunday, June 22, 1:30 PM Itzik Gottesman and Emily Socolov will speak, in Yiddish, on their recent trip to the Ukraine, and in particular the Bukovina. They will show many slides so if your Yiddish is not up to speed you still might find it interesting.
After the talk, Itzik's mother, Beyle Schaechter-Gottesman, will accompany her son and sing 6 or 7 songs from Bukovina, including his grandmother's older folksongs, and Beyle's interwar Chernovitz-based repertory and original songs. And, if he can learn it in time, a song that was sung at Gimpel's Yiddish Theater in Lviv/Lemberg in the early 1900s, since Lviv was one of his stops in Bukovina.
The talk is entitled "On the Trail of Our Yesteryears" and takes place at the Sholem Aleichem Cultural Center 3301 Bainbridge Avenue, Bronx NY, corner 208th st. one block from Montefiore Hospital.

Hi, I'm Rob Rudin, you may remember me drumming with such bands as The Boston City Band, einsterin's little homunculus, The Second Line Social Aid & Pleasure Society Brass Band, and The Alphabetical Order . I'm so proud to announce the maiden voyage of my new, original project, Rob Rudin & The Rude 4 on the eve of my birthday (it's a Big One). Come celebrate with friends and family: It's also my parents' wedding anniversary!
"There Will Be Cake" with Rob Rudin & The Rude 4, plus The Grass Gypsys. Tues., June 24, 7 pm. $10 suggested donation; includes dessert. Lily Pad, 1353 Cambridge St., Inman Sq., Cambridge. For information log onto www.lily-pad.net or call 617-395-1393.
Drummer Rob Rudin brings his "whirled" jazz quartet The Rude 4, plus folk-jazz duo The Grass Gypsys, to the Lily Pad. What makes this different from any other night of original music at the venerable concert venue is that THERE WILL BE CAKE to celebrate Rudin's birthday!
Rob Rudin & The Rude 4 plays original jazz, blues and funk, along with Celtic, Jewish and other traditional music in an improvisational context. Drummer / percussionist Rudin (www.myspace.com/robrudin) has played and recorded with artists ranging from Americana to Zydeco. Singer and pianist Vanessa Morris (www.newenglandconservatory.edu/yaStudies/faculty/morrisV.html) won't be pigeon-holed. A classical pianist turned contemporary improviser, she's equally at home playing jazz or improvising on southern U.S. folk songs, spirituals, lullabies and hollers. Bill McCormack (www.billmccormack.com) played with internationally renowned jazz guitarist Louis Stewart's band in their native Ireland. He taught U2's Adam Clayton bass before immigrating to Boston in 1991. Saxophonist and clarinetist Mark Chenevert's (www.stonelily.com/mark.html) résumé reads like a who's who of the Boston music scene. He's played rock with Willie "Loco" Alexander and The Del Fuegos and now works with the Chandler Travis Philharmonic and Hot Tamale Brass Band.
The Grass Gypsys (www.myspace.com/thegrassgypsys) are Colleen Rusconi, voice, and guitarist Justin Kleya. These two musician friends formed a duo, discovered their true love for one another, and traded in their day-to-day 9-5/music-at-night lifestyle for an "old school" motor-home and the open road. They travel from town to town like troubadours of old, spreading their tales laden with love, hope, adventure, excitement, and joy in the experience of life, opening hearts and minds along the way. The Grass Gypsys have been described as "… a joy to witness …" "… soul and serenity …" and "…consummate musicians, incorporating folk, jazz, blues, and world music." They have just released their second album "Lessons from Eden."
Come for the cake, stay for the sounds!

A soul-stirring musical journey, "The Spirit of Sepharad: From Casbah to Caliphate” traces the unique migration of Sephardic music from medieval Spain, across North Africa, to the Middle East. Hello Tummler fans.
We want to let you know that our good friend Mark Tipton, (occasional sub with the Tummlers and central member of Zhok Therapy), has written an original score for the 1920 silent film, The Golem. It's going to be shown, and performed, this week, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, at One Longfellow Square. This is going to be a rare and exciting event. We hope you can make it.
Weds 6/25 and Thurs 6/26 | The Golem w/the Tipton Chamber Players
One Longfellow Square www.onelongfellowsquare.com
8pm | $8
Here's a description of the music and film from Mark:
"My score for The Golem makes wide use of Yiddish scales and Jewish folk idioms, as well as incorporating period tonalities and improvisation. Musicians will include: Mark Tipton (Trumpet and Assorted Brasses), Nicole Rabata (Flutes), Peter Dugas (Piano), and John Clarke (Bass).
The film is set in 16th-Century Prague, both in the Jewish Ghetto and the Emperor's Palace. Rabbi Lowe detects a threatening constellation which signifies tragedy for his people. Soon after, the Emperor sends an edict to the Ghetto to do away with the Jews. Rabbi Lowe creates the Golem out of clay, and uses Dark Magic to bring the Golem to life. The creature both saves the Jewish people and puts them in extreme danger, while the Rabbi's daughter, Miriam, has a secret affair with a Knight from the Emperor's Court. Superb (read: "deliciously melodramatic") acting, stunning German Expressionist sets and costumes, and ingenious special-effects combine to make 'The Golem' a feast for the eyes. Hopefully the music will satisfy the ears, as well; drawing you further into this mystical tale of hope, greed, and triumph."
