A découvrir absolument !

The Berklee College of Music composers commissioned by Rabson, who is Jewish, include jazz great Joanne Brackeen, Latin vibraphonist Victor Mendoza, interactive composer Neil Leonard, turntable guru Stephen Webber, jazz/funk bassist Winston Maccow, and guitar luminary Norm Zocher. The works draw from jazz, funk, rock, Latin, hip-hop and contemporary classical music, and utilize improvisation, effects pedals, new performance techniques, and interactive computer performance.

Mimi Rabson has distinguished herself as one of Boston's most creative and versatile musicians. She appears regularly in classical, jazz, klezmer and other eclectic performances and frequently leads her own ensembles. She is a first-prize winner of the Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship in composition for 2003. She was a founding member of the Klezmer Conservatory Band and worked with that organization for many years touring, recording, composing and acting as musical director. Rabson appeared with Itzhak Perlman on "The Late Show with David Letterman" and was featured in a documentary about Klezmer music called "A Jumpin' Night in the Garden of Eden". Ms. Rabson served as musical director to academy award winner, Joel Grey in his production of "Borschtcapades '94". Her composition "Klezzified" was featured on Saturday Night Live.

Rabson created RESQ - the Really Eclectic String Quartet that plays her compositions and arrangements of jazz, funk, fusion, gospel and Latin music. RESQ has made two recordings and performed extensively in the Boston area.

In her 2003 recording "Music," she uses her electric violin in a power trio setting with electric bass and drums. It features noise-rock, post-jazz and electro-acoustic compositions and improvisations. She won the Massachusetts Cultural Council composition award for works on that recording.

Rabson's other performance credits include the premiere of "Fresh Faust" by Leroy Jenkins, the soundtrack for the award winning film "Sensorium" by Karen Aqua, the Boston Gay Men's Choir, the Boston Camarata, the New England Ragtime Ensemble, the Klezmatics, Sabana Blanca, Abby Rabinovitz, Deborah Henson-Conant, the Pablo Ablanedo Octet, and XLCR. She has appeared on A Prairie Home Companion twice, at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Wolf Trap, the Mann Center, the Place des Arts in Montreal and at many other world class venues.

Ms. Rabson is an Associate Professor at the Berklee College of Music.

Witness Relocation "Haggaddah," NYC, 21 Mar, 2009

publicity photoWitness Relocation (witnessrelocation.org), whom
Performing Arts Journal dubbed "a dance-theater anarchist's
utopia," will perform "Haggaddah," a work based on the
Passover Seder, March 19 to 29 in La MaMa's Annex Theater.
The project will link post-modern dance, narrative
storytelling, rock concerts, lectures, and dramatic scenes
into a vibrant artistic rendering of one of the world's most
ancient holidays, presenting the story in a way that anyone
from any culture can get inside it.

Audiences will be seated at a 50 foot long table, with the
show happening on and around it. The traditional Seder is a
ritual telling of the Exodus from Egypt on an intimate
scale. This show examines the ritual in a large,
post-modern context. There will be a spectacle combining
dance, theater, music and design to immerse the audience in
an intense re-envisioning of both the story and the act of
coming together to tell it.

THE THREE YIDDISH DIVAS

Saturday, March 21, 8pm Sunday, March 22 2pm

Theresa Tova (Jazz-Cabaret Diva), Joanne Borts (Theatre Diva) and Adrienne Cooper (Concert Stage Diva) blend their multilingual repertoire and phenomenal talents into a sophisticated, emotionally charged and stunningly powerful concert.

These outstanding stars of Yiddish cabaret pour passion and artistry into Yiddish jazz, cabaret and theatre songs—including an unforgettable repertoire of the Yiddish theatre greats who inspired modern Broadway.

JPlanet Jazz describes THERESA TOVA as a "towering, pan-cultural jazz-cabaret diva." In one phrase the essence of a career that spans over 25 years is aptly described but remains incomplete. An award winning actor, singer and writer, she is a "classy, jazzy and deliciously sensuous performer."

Joanne Borts is one of New York’s favourite theatre and cabaret artists with a catalogue that embraces American Standards and the rich traditions of the Yiddish Theatre. Inspired by Fanny Brice, Molly Picon and Bette Midler, this multi-talented Broadway Dynamo delivers a sexy, energetic and humor-filled evening of song and dance that bridges the gap between American musical theatre and her Yiddish roots.

Internationally recognized as one of this generation's stellar performers of Yiddish vocal music, ADRIENNE COOPER appears on concert, theatre, and club stages around the world. Her singing has been featured on some twenty recordings as well as on film, TV and radio.

"The Three Yiddish Divas are the cream of the Yiddish crop. Daring, creative, and downright beautiful. They can sing like you never heard before. A sophisticated, entertaining combination that brings together three of the most talented performers on the Yiddish Stage." —Mitch Smolkin, former Artistic Director of the Ashkenaz Festival

AtzilutAtzilut: Concert for Peace

This ten-member high-energy Middle Eastern ensemble features Arab and Jewish musicians in concert together to make a powerful statement for peace through shared music. Atzilut exemplifies the potential for creativity that emerges when musicians representing two traditions with common roots, celebrate hope and trust through music. They blend virtuoso cantorial vocals with the lightning percussion and hypnotic melodies of a Middle-Eastern orchestra into their own unique contemporary sound. The resulting musical collaboration is infectious, joyous, deep, sweet and passionate.

Atzilut makes two appearances in the Baltimore area through this unique collaboration between CCBC and Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School.

Witness Relocation "Haggaddah," NYC, 28 Mar, 2009

publicity photoWitness Relocation (witnessrelocation.org), whom
Performing Arts Journal dubbed "a dance-theater anarchist's
utopia," will perform "Haggaddah," a work based on the
Passover Seder, March 19 to 29 in La MaMa's Annex Theater.
The project will link post-modern dance, narrative
storytelling, rock concerts, lectures, and dramatic scenes
into a vibrant artistic rendering of one of the world's most
ancient holidays, presenting the story in a way that anyone
from any culture can get inside it.

Audiences will be seated at a 50 foot long table, with the
show happening on and around it. The traditional Seder is a
ritual telling of the Exodus from Egypt on an intimate
scale. This show examines the ritual in a large,
post-modern context. There will be a spectacle combining
dance, theater, music and design to immerse the audience in
an intense re-envisioning of both the story and the act of
coming together to tell it.

Rav Shmuel, NYC, 28 Mar 2009

From Rav Shmuel: "I'm playing a set at an interesting venue nicknamed The ROC House this Saturday night. ROC stands for Congregation Ramat Orah but I will not be leading services - they have set up a stage in their rec room and the space has a great vibe. I know because I played there a few months ago and it was really fun! There's a band called Eden playing at about 9:15 or so and I go on at about 10:15 - so come on out and catch some real fun music on a rainy Saturday night in NYC. Because you can."

sisters of sheynvilleInspired by the legendary Barry Sisters of the 1930s and 1940s, this all-female Swing-Klez sextet was voted Canada’s top folk vocal group in 2008. Their airtight three and four part vocal harmonies in Yiddish positively sizzle with seduction. You’ll think you’re in Paris when Gaucho opens with the Gypsy Swing sounds that recall legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt.

Atzilut concert for peace, Baltimore, MD, 28 Mar 2009

Klezmerkoncert på Fr.berg
TID : Mandag d. 30. marts kl. 20:00
