Chamber music, NYC, 1 May 2009

Chamber Music at Rodeph Sholom celebrates Israel Independence Day with a new program that highlights classical and Klezmer clarinetist Pavel Vinnitsky and the spectacular pianist Daniel Epstein on Friday evening, May 1st, at 8pm in Schnurmacher Chapel at Congregation Rodeph Sholom, 7 West 83rd Street, New York City. In May 2008, Mr. Vinnitsky was featured as the klezmer clarinet and bass clarinet soloist with the Bachanalia String Orchestra of New York in a concert dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel at Merkin Hall, NYC. The May 1st Chamber Music at Rodeph Sholom concert features guest artists Daniel Epstein, piano, Eliot Bailen, cello and Artistic Director, Susan Rotholz, flute, and Pavel Vinnitsky, clarinet, in a "talk-back with the artists" after the concert. The ensemble will play works by Brahms (1833-1897), Haydn (1732-1809), and contemporary composer Paul Schoenfield (1947-), whose works are inspired by his love of Hebrew, as well as a selection of Klezmer pieces. Regulars to the chamber music concerts should note in their calendars the change from Saturday afternoon to Friday evening for this end of season performance. The free concert is open to the public. Please remember to RSVP so that we can provide seating and refreshments for the comfort of everyone. For more information and to RSVP, call the Cantor's Study 646.454.3039.

The Sway Machinery record release party at the RUSSIAN BATHS - 7pm-2am
Banya
602 Coney Island Ave bet Beverley Rd & Ave C
Brooklyn, NY

Break out your bikini or swim trunks, and join us and our hand-picked crowd of artsy, different, funky (and nearly naked) New Yorkers for Gemini & Scorpio's legendary Russian Baths party (as seen in The Village Voice "Best of 2006"). We will have the newly remodeled & sparkling clean baths to ourselves, with every steam room and sauna ready to please, plus a few hand-picked professionals on hand for the optional platzas and massages. There are three levels and multiple rooms to the space: Russian, Turkish and Swedish steam rooms, jacuzzi and cold plunge pool; the poolside lounge and the dance floor; hookah & chillout lounges upstairs; plus the rooftop smoking deck.

Inside, The Sway Machinery will have you sweating faster than the saunas playing two sets, at 10pm and 12am. DJ Reagonomics keeps the dance floor sizzling till 2am while we dole out pierogies for everyone. There will be an open vodka bar 10-11pm, featuring homemade infused vodkas in pomegranate blackberry and ginger flavors.

Only 120 tickets are available, and most parties sell out in advance. Cost: $95 VIP ticket (7pm entry + open vodka bar + authentic multi-course Russian dinner) /$55 regular ticket (9pm entry + open vodka bar) / $35 discount ticket (11pm entry). More details on each ticket tier are on our website.

This is the kind of party you always imagine, but can never quite find in real life!

Budapest Klezmer Band presents "Klezmer Magic"
George Weston Recital Hall at the Toronto Centre For The Arts
Toronto, Canada
Friday, May 8, 2009 at 7:30 p.m.

TICKET INFO: Tickets are available at Ticketmaster: 416-872-1111, online at www.ticketmaster.ca or in person at the box office of the Toronto Centre For The Arts. This is a licensed all-ages event.

… Midday heat will give way to evening coolness soon. The golden rays of the setting sun exposing the glistening dust in the air stirred up by horse-drawn carriages with enchanting music flowing through your window with the smell of blossoming acacia…. Do you hear it? That is Stempenju, the fiddler well-known in neighboring townships. He will play for you, just ask him. What would you like to order, joy or melancholy in exchange for the small coin or kind words? You’ll definitely find the kind words because his violin speaks to you in the language of your soul…

After a short engagement at the Toronto Jewish Film Festival two years ago Ferenc Javori the founder, composer and musical director of the Budapest Klezmer Band is now back in Toronto with his seven piece band and two singers to entertain the Canadian audiences.

The Budapest Klezmer Band is an extraordinary group of musicians. The band was formed in 1990 in the heart of Europe - in Hungary. Their creativity is a breathtaking, thrilling experiment in the field of Jewish folk music. Folk music is a perception of a nation's soul, which creates it. Klezmer music is a song of the Jewish soul. It is an exuberant revelry, the lyricism of trivial evenings in Jewish townships. It is an ardent declaration of love, and a prayer about eternal life. Klezmer art had almost been eliminated during the years of the Second World War however, it now enjoys a new era of popularity as interesting as everything that is original.

The masterpieces of Jewish Folk Music in the interpretation of Ferenc Javori such as Tartar Dance, Le Chajem Rebbe, Yiddishe Blues, Yiddishe Tango, Bei Mir Bist Du Schejn and other famous songs from musicals like Fiddler On The Roof and Bridal Dance will be offered in this over two-hour magical performance at the George Weston Recital Hall at the Toronto Centre For The Arts on Friday, May 8, 2009 - 7:30 PM.

The Budapest Klezmer Band has performed in over 25 countries worldwide with over 300 performances of this program alone. For further information about the band visit: www.budapestklezmer.hu/english.asp

“We are proud to present the “Klezmer Magic” concert which is truly a world class event and perfectly in line with our commitment to present the finest quality concerts to the audiences in North America” – said Steven Kiss president of Celebritas Entertainment, which is presenting the concert.

Lula Lounge and Open City celebrate Lula's seventh anniversary with a twelve-night festival that unites Cuban, Brazilian and African Reggae with Jazz, Sicilian, Indian Rumba Flamenca, Hindustani raag and MPB. The festival brings local artists together with international and Canadian talent from across the country.

We are pleased to announce that Odessa/Havana will once again be a part of the the Lulaworld Festival! After taking some time off this winter, during which time some new music was written, the band roared back with a great concert in Hamilton last month. Along with regulars Alex Gajic, Rick Shadrach Lazar, Max Senitt and Paco Luviano, we'll be joined by special guests Dave Restivo (piano) and Perry White (saxophones)

Lula Lounge is one of our favourite venues on the planet and certainly takes top honours as a treasure of our great city. A night at Lula is a guaranteed good time, with quality music, good food and an ambienced that is unmatched in our opinion.

Come and celebrate World Music with us at the one and only Lula Lounge on May 13th.

Odessa/Havana will be returning to the recording studio this coming autumn to begin laying down tracks their as-yet-untitled sophomore album. More on that to come….

NEW KLEZMER MUSIC and IT ROCK’S !!!

Nussbaum - Smidl - Ougaard, Copenhagen, Denmark, 29 May 2009

Nussbaum-Smidl-OurgaardNussbaum - Smidl - Ougaard
Fredag d. 29. maj kl. 21:00

Paradox Trio, NYC, 29 May 2009

PARADOX TRIO - ENJA CD release!
May 29th at Drom, 7:30 pm (to 10pm) in NYC!
DROM,
85 Avenue A, NYC.
(212) 777-1157,
dromnyc.com

From Matt Dariau:
I am pleased to announce that Paradox Trio's ENJA release, GAMBIT, (the cd features Theodosii Spassov, virtouso from Bulgaria on kaval) is finally being released in the states through Allegro distribution. The date is May 29th at Drom, 8 pm in NYC! The Show will feature music from the cd and new compositions! please annouce. thank you! —matt

New York based PARADOX TRIO creates original music inspired by Eastern European traditions driven by an improvisational NY edge . With their new CD, GAMBIT, on the ENJA label, Just released in the US via Allegro distribution! and three CD's on the Knitting Factory label, Paradox Trio has been influential in advancing world fusion with their innovative exploration of Balkan modes, Gypsy, middle eastern and klezmer music. For the past 12 years these four musicians have been notorius for their high energy concerts throughout North America, Canada and Europe. The group's dynamic performances and approach cut across stylistic and geographic boundaries creating an unusual and eclectic sound - redefining the concept "world beat". Gambit, their fourth CD, is now out on the ENJA label (Munich) and features the Bulgarian kaval virtuoso, Theodosii Spassov. Their third Knitting Factory Records CD, Source, explores the common ground between Balkan and Klezmer music. Their second CD, Flying at a Slant is regarded as a work that gives voice to a truly organic fusion of several idioms - unifying the high20energy, complex rhythms and oriental modes of Balkan and Rom (gypsy) music with jazz composition and improvisation. Their 1st CD Paradox Trio was nominated for the prestigious 1996 German critics prize. Paradox Trio is currently working on a collaboration with the great Serbian/French pianist, Bojan Z. They have written and performed live music scores for the silent films Battleship Potemkin (Eisenstein), Un Chien Andalou (Bunuel/Dali) and Isaac Babel’s Benya Krik about a famous Jewish gangster in Odessa in revolutionary Russia. They have also created music for independent films and a PBS documentary on Dashiel Hammet.

The group features: Matt Darriau on sax and clarinet & two unique Bulgarian instruments, the Kaval (end-blown flute) and the Gaida (bagpipe).
Brad Shepik on guitars and Balkan strings.
Rufus Cappadocia on 5-string cello.
Seido Salifoski on dumbeks and percussion.

Saxophonist, clarinetist, ethnic-woodwind specialist and composer Matt Darriau has made several innovative contributions to the New York music scene. His background in the fertile and eclectic milieu of the New England Conservatory of Music's Third Stream program in the early 80's, and the continued practice of Balkan, Klezmer and Celtic folk idioms, have helped shape his esthetic and passion for creating new and unusual music. He is active as composer-musician in theKlezmatics, Ballin' The Ja ck (avant-swing septet - 2 CD’s on KF records) Disastro Totale (with Yuri Lemeshev of Gogol Bordello), Roberto Rodriguez Septet(Tzadik), FRANK LONDON'S Klezmer Brass Allstars (Piranah) and his recently formed Yusef Lateef project and the Recycled Waltz Orchestra. He has been awarded grants and commisions from the NEA, Chamber Music America (2005) and is a regular in New York’s downtown jazz scene.

Five-string cellist, Rufus Cappadocia is both a musical maverick to the bone and one of the leading voices of cutting edge cello today. His technique and musicianship inspire awe in even the most discerning critics, who have characterized his playing as “powerful…exploring territory that is positively otherworldly.” He has toured throughout the Americas and Europe with both fringe and famous groups and is celebrated for his unique collaborations with artists from across the globe -- from the Balkans to the Caribbean, from West Africa to North America. Rufus has toured as a founding member of numerous groups such as Urban Tap, Dave Fiuzcynski; has co-produced a CD with Barney Mcall (piano Gary Bartz) and Badal Roy (tabla Miles Davis); and has just finished recording and co-producing a new project, Vodou Drums of Haiti, with “Bonga” Jean-Baptiste as well as a CD of unaccompanied solo cello, called “Songs for Cello.”

Originally from Seattle, guitarist Brad Shepik has toured the world a nd recorded with Paul Motian's Electric Bebop Band, Joey Baron’s Killer Joey, Pachora, Dave Douglas' Tiny Bell Trio and Simon Shaheen. He leads his own groups, including his Trio (Knitting Factory records) and several cd's on the Songlines Label. Other musical associations include performances and/or recordings with Carla Bley's Escalator Over the Hill, Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra, Yuri Yunakov's Bulgarian Wedding Band, Tim Berne, Kenny Werner. Brad is a prolific composer and several of his prices are featured in Paradox Trio’s repertoire. In recent years he has added Turkish Saz, and Portuguese guitar to the groups sound.

Macedonian-born percussionist and dumbek virtuoso Seido Salifoski plays music from his Rom (Gypsy) lineage and Balkan traditions. He is the foremost dumbek player in the New York area and has performed extensively for the past 12 years with leading Eastern European and N.Y. artists including Bulgarian clarinetist Ivo Papazov, Husni Omar Faruk, and has recorded and toured with Yuri Yanakov (Bulgarian wedding band). His multiple percussion has been featured on numerous Balkan, klezmer and new music recordings and he is a regular teacher at the Balkan Music and Dance Workshops around North America.

"This hard working crew makes joyful music with an edge, and it happens - from rhythmic Klezmer to offbeat Balkan tunes - with apparent ease."-The New Yorker

"Matt Darriau, one of the Klezmatics, entwines his sinuous sax and clarinet solos with an electric guitar to a percolating Balkan beat that recalls Klezmer's eastern influences." Marty Lip, New York Newsday
