Johnny D's Restaurant & Music Club
17 Holland St., Davis Square, Somerville, MA

The Qadim Ensemble, a cross-cultural group of Jewish and Arabic musicians, has joined forces to play for peace on a new CD and concert tour. Produced by celebrated neyzen Eliyahu Sills and Six Degrees' artist Jef Stott, and released by Embarka Records, "Eastern Wind" debuted last summer at #7 on the Billboard World Music Charts. The peacemaking musicians will play one Boston area concert on this East Coast tour at Johnny D's in Davis Square, Somerville, April 7th.

The Johnny D's performance will feature Gari Hegedus on oud and saz, Faisal Zedan on Arabic, Moroccan, Persian & Indian perrcussion, Rachel Valfer Sills on lead vocals and oud, and Eliyahu Sills on ney, bansuri and oud.

"Eastern Wind" masterfully mixes the sounds of Middle Eastern instruments to create a collection of traditional and original songs that celebrate the shared musical and spiritual heritage of a region now deeply divided by ethnic and religious differences. Featuring folk tunes, improvisations, and songs of love and devotion from the 12th century onward, the eclectic ensemble uses traditional instruments to travel on a musical journey through Arabia, Armenia, Egypt, Israel, Morocco, Turkey and Yemen.

Jef Stott's digital production brings to life ancient acoustic instruments, including the ney, oud, saz, bansuri flute, kemanche, tablas, doira, qarqaba, bendir, daf, zarb, riqq, darbuka, dhola, and upright bass. "Eastern Wind" features accomplished multi- instrumentalists and vocalists Bouchaib Abdelhadi, Eliyahu Sills, Evan Fraser, Faisal Zedan, Fares Hedayati, John Villa, and Rachel Valfer, the group's lead vocalist.

Sometimes those attending are asked for their feedback on an original piece, sometimes participants jam for awhile.

Some of the folks who attend are from Hava Nashira, some are involved musically at local synagogues, and some are Chicago-area musicians. All singers and instrumentalists are welcome. Its a nice way to meet other Jewish musicians and learn some new tunes.

The event will be held from 1-3pm at Congregation BJBE in Deerfield and is sponsored by KFAR Jewish Arts Center.

There is no fee to participate, but please RSVP so that we can prepare the space accordingly.

New York Concert Review hailed the Musicians of Lenox Hill as "exemplary throughout" and "extremely impressive, technically and musically . The featured performers, Jae-Hyuck Cho, piano, Cornelius Dufallo, violin, Sean Katsuyama , cello, Wei-Yang Andy Lin, viola, Sivan Magen, Harp and Soo-Kyung Park, flute and artistic director, have each won international acclaim performing with major orchestras and ensembles and winning many of the world's most prestigious music competitions. This concert brings these extraordinary musicians together to perform chamber music written by some of the world s greatest composers as well as a new work by an emerging young star. Each of the composers on the program has been inspired by New York City and, at important points in their careers, called the City their home.

The audience is invited to attend a dessert reception with the artists following the concert. The concert, which is an annual event now in its 12th year, is made possible by gift to Temple Israel by the late Muriel Levy in memory of her husband, Dr.Hyman Levy and their son, Jerrold Levy, fulfilling her vision to continue the music she and her husband loved and support the Musicians of Lenox Hill.
