Kugelplex, San Francisco, CA, 3 June 2010

KugelplexLet's Go Dance@Jessie Series
A Klezmer Wedding Celebration with Kugelplex
Thursday, June 3, 6:00pm-7:30pm, Free
Jessie Square (Mission between 3rd and 4th Streets, San Francisco)

With Kugelplex, the Bay Area's most rockin' purveyor of old world Klezmer, join the wedding procession of Sharon and Amber into a madcap whirl of clapping, stomping and easy to follow dances led by Klezmer dance maven, Bruce Bierman. Enjoy the vocals of celebrated recording artist, Jewlia Eisenberg, and the comic antics of David Rosenfeld-as we celebrate love in a circle of dancing community.

Kugelplex will be celebrating marriage equality for all with a blowout dance party featuring our dear friends, Sharon and Amber, recently married when it was legal, and now very active in the fight for marriage equality. They are both wonderful spokespeople for legalizing same sex marriage. Unable to dance for their wedding ceremony at the time and because klezmer music and dance have their deepest roots in the Jewish wedding celebration, this will be the party we had always wanted to give them.

Let's Go Dance@Jessie is a free monthly open-air dance party in Jessie Square in front of the Contemporary Jewish Museum and next to St. Patrick's Church in downtown San Francisco on the First Thursday of each month from May to October from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. The series offers dance lessons and music from today's best Bay Area artists.

Beyond the PaleBeyond the Pale

Saturday June 5, 2010, 7:30pm
Koerner Hall, TELUS Centre for Performing Arts
273 Bloor St West, Toronto

Beyond the Pale will perform for the first time at Toronto's beautiful new downtown concert space Koerner Hall, as special guests with the Toronto Children's Chorus. The concert will feature the TCC in a program entitled "Around the World in 80 Minutes," a musical journey from Canada and the United States, to Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, South America, and New Zealand. Featured composers include Srul Irving Glick, Allister MacGillivray, Paul Halley, Morten Lauridsen, Krzysztof Penderecki, Richard Oswin ... and BTP's own Martin van de Ven. Martin was commissioned to create a new piece for BTP with the TCC. The composition "Being Margolia," is based on the life of Manya Lipshitz, who grew up in a children's commune in 1920's Russia before moving to Canada, where she became a Yiddish teacher and an early member of the leftist Jewish community of Camp Naivelt. Still functioning today, Camp Naivelt's current corps of children engaged in an extended study of Manya's life 2 summers ago, connecting her social justice values and distinctly Yiddish worldview to their own 21st century lives. Martin's involvement in the original project led to the new composition, whose text was created by Ruth Howard of Jumblies Theatre.

BTP will also perform a short set of some of its own tunes within the concert.

The Schaechter Legacy: Growing Up in Yiddish in the 21st Century, London, 13 June 2010

The Schaechter/Gottesman dynasty has played a central role in America's Yiddish-speaking academic and cultural scene. From renowned linguist Mordkhe Schaechter and poet and songwriter Beyle Schaechter-Gottesman onwards, the family has produced poets, musicians, journalists and educators active in keeping Yiddish alive and thriving. In this unique event, Meena-Lifshe Viswanath - current MIT student and native Yiddish speaker - will give an insider's history of the family, and talk about growing up as a Yiddish speaker
in the 21st century. The programme will be interspersed with Yiddish songs and poems, from within the family and beyond. Daughter of Yiddish poet Gitl Schaechter-Viswanath, and one of Mordkhe Schaechter's sixteen Yiddish-speaking grandchildren, Meena-Lifshe Viswanath is a native of Teaneck, New Jersey. She is currently a Civil Engineering major at MIT, and has spent the past year at the University of Cambridge as a Cambridge-MIT exchange student. Meena-Lifshe is currently Treasurer of the Yiddish youth organisation Yugntruf, having previously served as its Chairperson. She was a member of the now-defunct Pripetshik
Singers, and now sings in Techiya, MIT's Jewish a cappella group.

This event will take place at the Spiro Ark Centre, 25-26 Enford Street, London W1H 1DW, UK at 7:30 pm on Sunday 13th June 2010.
Tickets £12 (+£1 online booking fee), available from the Spiro Ark website, see:

Rob Rudin's Half Jewish, 18 July 2010

ROB RUDIN'S HALF-JEWISH
The “There Will Be Cake” biennial
plus Dirty Water Brass Band
serving up eclectic music with dessert
Thurs., June 24, 10 pm
Lily Pad
Cambridge, MA

(Cambridge, MA) Rob Rudin's Half-Jewish: the “There Will Be Cake” biennial; plus Dirty Water Brass Band. Thurs., June 24, 10 pm. $10 suggested donation; includes dessert. Lily Pad, 1353 Cambridge St., Inman Sq., Cambridge. For information log onto www.lily-pad.net or call 617-395-1393.

It's been two years since drummer Rob Rudin served up a nice piece of cake along with original music on the eve of his birthday. He may or may not be two years wiser, but he does have experience throwing a lively party at the Lily Pad venue. This year's concert features Rudin's new Jewish compositions and pieces by Jewish composers John Zorn and Leonard Cohen. Rudin will also premiere the suite Number 37 based on the life of world-champion athlete, jai-alai player Joey Cornblit, whose player number was 37.

"I put together the group Half-Jewish in order to play with some of my favorite musicians and to show that klezmer is not theonly Jewish music," says Rudin. The musicians include two Hot Tamale Brass Band members, clarinetist and saxophonistMark Chenevert and Danny Heath on trombone and vocals. Gill Aharon, who plays piano with his trio every Sunday at the Lily Pad, is along for the ride, as is trumpeter Sam Dechenne of John's Brown Body, HUMANWINE bassist Paul Dilley, violinist Mimi Rabson of the Klezmer Conservatory Band, and multi-reedman Ted Roland.

More specifics on Rudin's suite Number 37:
Born in Montreal Quebec in 1955 to Israeli immigrants, Joey Cornblit's family moved to Miami where, at age 12, he began playing jai-alai, a popular sport in Southern Florida. He traveled to Spain to train in the Basque game (similar to handball) in which players grip a reed basket and volley a rock-hard ball at speeds up to 150 miles per hour. Rudin's music reflects the places Cornblit traveled, as well as his embrace of eastern meditation and his friendship with Rudin's father, self-described number-one-jai-alai-fan Harold Rudin. The listener can expect salsa, jazz, a spoken fugue, marches, Hindusthani (Indian classical) music, a live ping-pong match, and, yes, even a little klezmer.

The Dirty Water Brass Band, Boston's newest New Orleans-style group, opens the show.

Come for the cake, stay for the sounds!
