At Center for Jewish History 15 W 16th St., Manhattan
Join klezmer violinist Jake Shulman-Ment on a multi-media musical travelogue of his year as a Fulbright Scholar exploring the deep roots that connect Romanian music and klezmer music. Based in the city of Botosani, in Romanian Moldavia, Shulman-Ment conducted field research with elderly Roma (Gypsy) musicians, organized and performed in a ten-city musical tour of old Romanian synagogues, and even played for the US Ambassador as a soloist with the regional folk orchestra. Klezmer pioneer Michael Alpert will serve as a respondent for the lecture. After the lecture, please join us in the Great Hall for a Tantshoyz Yiddish Dance Party led by Michael Alpert featuring rare Romanian-Jewish repertoire and a free reception.

Armed with his Akai MPC, heritage and love for genre-bending music, Socalled, aka Josh Dolgin, is a Yiddish rapping, accordion wielding hip-hop maestro. Heralded by Klezmer and hip hop musicians alike, he builds Jewish music from the bottom-up. Previous albums Hiphopkhasene (Piranha), Socalled Seder (2005, JDUB), Ghettoblaster (2007, JDUB ) and now Sleepover (2011, Dare to Care) reached into the past to mine an amalgamation of traditional and contemporary influences.

L’AVENIR DE LA MUSIQUE KLEZMER
L’ARTICHAUT ORKESTRA : T for Teresa

Location : fnac, Digitick

The internationally-acclaimed and Bay Area based Red Hot Chachkas infuse the klezmer tradition of Eastern European Yiddish music with jazz, rock, oldtime, classical, and latin influences. Their hot sound and uptempo beat has folks up dancing. Bandleader and classical violinist Julie Egger is joined by seasoned musicians from disparate backgrounds: soulful Barbara Speed (clarinet), balkanized Diana Strong (accordion), bluegrass Tony Phillips (mandolin), jazzy Breck Diebel (bass), and rockin' Michael Arrow (drums).
Cradle Duende presents a combination of klezmer and flamenco, 'klezmenco,' with an infusion of reggae and cumbia dance rhythms. Cradle Duende takes its name from the Spanish word 'duende,' in reference to a musically heightened state of emotion, expression and authenticity; and a merging of disparate musical traditions that each evolved from independent cradles of civilization. Cradle Duende brings the strength of deep cultural roots into the party atmosphere.

Vagabond Opera
October 23, 2011, 7pm
Skokie Theatre
7924 N. LIncoln Ave.
Skokie, IL
Bohemian Cabaret ensemble Vagabond Opera is described by the Washington Post as "A band of ceaseless charisma, boundless energy, impeccable musicianship and more than a little touch of both the naughty and exotic."
The group delivers passionate offerings of Bohemian cabaret for young and old. Paris hot jazz, gut bucket swing, tangos, Ukrainian folk-punk ballads, klezmer and vigorous originals meet a world of riverboat gambling queens, Turkish belly dancers, and the enigmatic Marlene Dietrich. Weaving elements of Kurt Weil, Duke Ellington and Edith Piaf with absurdist flair, theatrics and an old world mood, Vagabond Opera presents the new wave of opera–lusty voices singing in 13 languages and presenting a cabaret of rich musical phrasing, sparkling lyrics and indomitable stage presence, all played with exuberance, skill and a gritty Vagabond edge. This is Opera liberated and reinvented for everyone!
