David Krakauer, one of the most important and influential musicians in new Jewish music today and of the vital new wave of klezmer, is known mostly for his amplified sound that pushes the boundaries of klezmer to include elements of jazz, rock, funk, and hip-hop. With this program, he will play acoustic versions of his music with his quartet.

Carl Dimow, flutist, guitarist, arranger and composer for the Casco Bay Tummlers, will be teaching a special four week introductory Klezmer Ensemble class, this October at Portland Conservatory of Music. The class will meet on four consecutive Tuesday evenings, starting October 8th. The classes will go from 7:30– 9:00 pm. The tuition is $80 for members, (currently enrolled private lesson students at the Conservatory), and $100 for non-members.
The only requirement for the class is a basic facility on your instrument. In the class we’ll be learning and arranging a number of classic klezmer tunes. In the process we’ll learn some of the scales and rhythms that define this music. We’ll also discuss the history of the music and listen to recordings by influential musicians.

Naftule’s Dream is playing a set this Saturday night, Oct. 26, at 10:30 at the Lily Pad in Inman Square, Cambridge (1353 Cambridge St)! It is a triple bill with Klezwoods & Jeni Jol. Jeni Jol starts at 9:00, we go on at 10:30 and Klezwoods at 11:45. Jeni Jol performs music of The Balkans, Greece and Turkey as a duo led by virtuoso guitarist Tev Stevig. Klezwoods will close the evening with traditional and original music based off the Klezmer, Eastern European and Arabic styles with modern improvisation, grooves and melodies.
