Three renowned performers of Eastern European Jewish music come together in this exceptional new trio: Lorin Sklamberg, co-founder of the legendary Klezmatics; uniquely innovative clarinetist Merlin Shepherd, and the remarkable vocalist/pianist Polina Shepherd, originally from Siberia.
Each performer represents a different nation, yet their backgrounds are closely related, their ancestors emigrating from the Ukraine to find a better world elsewhere. This fresh collaboration blends traditional and contemporary Yiddish and Russian song with klezmer styles and Southern Mediterranean music. Influenced by several cultures and maintaining individual styles, the trio plays original and traditional material with freedom and spontaneity. With mournful solo clarinet, bouncy village songs, and some fiery vocals, their performance takes us on a breathtaking musical journey that is full of spirited joy and deep emotion.

This extraordinary multicultural event features three choirs: the Zamir Chorale of Boston, America’s foremost Jewish choral ensemble; VOICES 21C, a diverse choir dedicated to positive interactions, social justice, and global understanding; and the Boston Community Gospel Choir, which often performs at the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The groups will each separately perform songs from the Jewish, Muslim and Christian cultures respectively, and then join together to perform music that transcends the collective cultures. The idea of shared values, especially in this turbulent time, rises above our many cultures and connects us. By using music to explore the themes of freedom, we seek to create a culture of understanding, faith, and hope.

Warsaw Ghetto Memorial Plaza
Riverside Park, west side of Riverside Drive between 83rd and 84th Street
New York, NY 10024.
This year as every year, we invite you to join us in remembering the victims of and fighters against the Nazi destruction of European Jewry as we gather at the memorial plaza in Riverside Park at 3 PM on Wednesday, April 19th (not Tuesday as per my mistake in previous email), in honor of the 74th anniversary of the Warsaw ghetto uprising. This event is co-sponsored by the Congress for Jewish Culture, the Workmen's Circle, and the Jewish Labor Committee.
The Congress for Jewish Culture gratefully acknowledges the Bertha Foundation as well as private donors for their support of this and other programming; and the Riverside Park Fund for their help in arranging the event and maintaining the Warsaw Ghetto Memorial Plaza.
David Chevan, with Will Bartlett on sax, Jesse Chevan on drums and Warren Byrd on keyboards. What’s so special about this concert? Well, glad you asked, it will feature original compositions and arrangements by Will Bartlett, the unsung hero of so many of my projects over the past 20+ years. Will is a founding member of Bassology, the Afro-Semitic Experience and he has played in the Nu Haven Kapelye and many other one off projects. So, in my mind it’s about time we listen to some of his music played by some people who really know it. So, this one is going to be a rollicking evening of creative fun without a doubt.

Drawing from repertories of Jewish song from the Holocaust gathered from the cabarets, camps, ghettos, theaters, and films, the 2016 Grammy-nominated New Budapest Orpheum Society bears witness to those murdered, those who resisted, and those who must not be forgotten. In this concert commemorating Yom HaShoah, the NBOS honors composers Hermann Leopoldi, Friedrich Hollander, Imré Kálmán, Hans Eisler/Bertolt Brecht, and Erich Korngold, whose musical contributions trace a path to the European Jewish past resounded once again.
