Le cabaret se déroule en yiddish.
Considéré comme le fondateur des littératures yiddish et hébraïque modernes, Mendele Moykher-Sforim (1836–1917) a forgé une langue littéraire qu’il n’a cessé de perfectionner. Prosateur hors pair, père du roman réaliste et allégorique et acteur clé de l’ouverture du monde juif à la pensée et à la culture occidentales, il a su s’inspirer des textes fondateurs de la tradition juive pour créer une littérature originale et universelle. Ses œuvres en prose, drames, essais et traductions en yiddish et en hébreu ont eu une grande influence sur l’imaginaire collectif juif. Ses héros et les lieux fictifs où ils évoluent sont devenus, à côté de ceux créés par son fils spirituel Sholem-Aleykhem, des paradigmes du monde yiddish d’autrefois.
