One of the best Klezmer/yiddish culture camps in North America is the annual "KlezKanada", held each years in the spectacular Laurentian mountains north of Montreal. Organized, in part, by the folks in Brave Old World, the program is always spectacular.
Events include lectures, a mini film festival, and of course, intensive workshops in singing, klezmer music, theatre, and dance. The "Kidz for Klez" program is also great. This is the best summer camp in the world (in fact, the event is hosted at a Jewish summer camp). Register early to get the best bunks.

Formed by a group of music "all-stars" with an interest in interpreting traditional Yiddish music in a modern light, From Both Ends of the Earth transforms infinitely rich traditional music into music for today - thrilling, rhythmic, vibrant and timeless.
This collaborative project combines the rich and varied musical backgrounds of all these musicians: jazz, folk, R&B and Klezmer. The group's goal is to find personal expression through the music of their forebears, bringing all they know as musicians to this traditional music, to re-discover the spirit of the music and to create, not re-create.
"From Both Ends of the Earth is nothing less than a startling example of what happens when good musicians have fun with serious ideas" - Bartley Kives, Winnipeg Free Press

The GROYSER KONCERT is coming to Montreal.
A popular feature of the KlezKanada Festival of Yiddish/Jewish Music and Culture held annually in the Laurentians, the GROYSER KONCERT is relocating to Montréal and the first concert will take place Sunday, February 29 at the Monument National Theatre, 1182 Boulevard Saint-Laurent.
Three internationally acclaimed groups will headline the program: New York-based Brave Old World, which has stood at the forefront of the Klezmer revival around-the-world for over two decades; Beyond the Pale, a Toronto group that has been winning raves across North America for its contemporary approach to traditional Klezmer music; and Montreal’s Shtreiml, just back from a successful European tour that won raves for its Klezmer, gypsy and jazz music.
Broadway singing star Joanne Borts and Yaela Hertz, violinist and concertmaster emerita of the McGill Chamber Orchestra, will also be featured. Michael Wex, the celebrated author, raconteur and itinerant teacher of Yiddish, will be the MC.
Jointly sponsored by KlezKanada, the YM-YWHA Montreal Jewish Community Centres and the Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts, the GROYSER KONCERT signals the beginning of a collaborative relationship between the organizations, with the intent of creating a permanent base for Klezmer music in Montréal.
Proceeds help support KlezKanada’s unique youth scholarship fund and the cultural programming of Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts.
Patron tickets at $250 and Supporter tickets at $100 are available with partial tax receipts. General admission (Balcony seats) is $36 and tickets are on sale at the Saidye Bronfman Centre Box Office, 5170 Côte Ste-Catherine Road, or by telephone at (514) 739-7944.

Wednesday February 2, 7:30pm
Bravo! Television Network (Rogers channel 40 in Toronto)
Featuring David’s four Bravo!FACT-funded short films.
Eric Stein writes:
I would like to express thanks on behalf of myself and my family for the overwhelming amount of condolences we have received since my brother David's tragic death on December 12. His loss is incredibly painful to us, but knowing the impact he made in this world makes us proud. David lived a very full life. In his 34 years he experienced and accomplished more than many people do in a lifetime. He was truly one-of-a-kind. Soulful, warm-hearted, charismatic, adventurous, creative, intelligent, talented, funny...the list goes on. David followed his dreams and inspired and touched so many peoples lives, including many in the Jewish cultural world. From my own perspective, aside from him being an amazing big brother, role model, and friend, I owe David for my current career – it was his interest in Yiddish culture and music that ultimately led me to pursue my musical career in klezmer.
It would take me thousands more words to adequately pay tribute to my brother. In lieu of that, I want to at least announce that there will be a tribute broadcast in Canada on Bravo! TV on February 2, 7:30pm est (4:30pm pst) featuring 4 of David’s short films, 2 of which I was privileged to contribute music to with Beyond the Pale. All details about the broadcast are below. Many other memorial efforts are being planned, including tributes at the Toronto Jewish Film Festival in May and at KlezKanada in August. My family and I also have ambitious plans for lasting memorial tributes to David, including an endowment or awards of some kind for young artists involved in Jewish culture. If anyone would like to help honour David’s memory and keep his spirit alive, please donate to David’s memorial fund (info below). And if you have personal stories or remembrances of David that you would like to share we would be very happy to hear them.

"Dr Judith Cohen is among the few people to have spent considerable time in Belmonte and other Portuguese villages with a strong historic, and sometimes contemporary, Crypto-Jewish presence.
She set out on an exploration to these small Portuguese villages in the mid 1990s in order to answer the question: Are there old Crypto-Jewish songs? Since then, she has returned regularly, and is still intrigued by what she continues to learn about the role of music in the lives of the Portuguese "Judeus"."

Koerner Hall, TELUS Centre for Performing Arts
273 Bloor St West, Toronto
Beyond the Pale will perform for the first time at Toronto's beautiful new downtown concert space Koerner Hall, as special guests with the Toronto Children's Chorus. The concert will feature the TCC in a program entitled "Around the World in 80 Minutes," a musical journey from Canada and the United States, to Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, South America, and New Zealand. Featured composers include Srul Irving Glick, Allister MacGillivray, Paul Halley, Morten Lauridsen, Krzysztof Penderecki, Richard Oswin ... and BTP's own Martin van de Ven. Martin was commissioned to create a new piece for BTP with the TCC. The composition "Being Margolia," is based on the life of Manya Lipshitz, who grew up in a children's commune in 1920's Russia before moving to Canada, where she became a Yiddish teacher and an early member of the leftist Jewish community of Camp Naivelt. Still functioning today, Camp Naivelt's current corps of children engaged in an extended study of Manya's life 2 summers ago, connecting her social justice values and distinctly Yiddish worldview to their own 21st century lives. Martin's involvement in the original project led to the new composition, whose text was created by Ruth Howard of Jumblies Theatre.
BTP will also perform a short set of some of its own tunes within the concert.

This year the Gallery staff is thrilled to present a four piece band with a great repertoire of highly dancable Jewish music, including Klezmer, Sephardic and Israeli songs.
This group of musicians are among the top players in the Kootenays!
Clarinetist Nicola Everton was with the Vancouver Symphony for twenty years, and has done extensive recording and touring. She is now Artistic Director of the Kootenay Gallery Concert Series, and has taught at the Valhalla Summer School of Music.
Bass player Rob Fahie is also an amazing player, having completed 2 degrees in Jazz and Classical music. He has toured internationally with high profile Canadian artists like Ranee Lee, Sophie Milman and Nikki Yanofsky. He has played at The Blue Note, Dizzy’s Club and Iridium in New York City as well as the Catalina Jazz Club, The Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall.
Accordionist Catherine McGrath is a well known folk musician and broadcaster in the West Kootenays. She was a founding member of Nelson's Heavy Shtetl, a klezmer and traditional jazz band, Cattle Annie, The Crooked Corral, a western swing group, and Kootenay Kontraband, an old-time dance band.
Singer Allan Merovitz is a legend in Canadian Klezmer circles. Allan, who is based in Calgary, has recorded and toured North America and Europe with top Klezmer and Yiddish groups, and has headed up his own band, KlezMerovitz. He has been nominated for a Juno, and won a CBC Etoiles-Galaxy award with his group Merovitz Project, in Montreal.
An experienced stage actor and storyteller, Allan will tell the story of the First Hanukkah in Canada, as experienced by Aaron Hart, an immigrant who fought with the British back in the 18th century, and then built a fur trading empire in Lower Canada.
Hanukkah celebrations are all about kids, and this year we have a group of young musicians who will perform a song or two

Concert: "Defending the Homeland: Rare Yiddish Songs of World War II"
Featuring Psoy Korolenko and Anna Shternshis
Sunday, April 19, 2015, 8pm
Al Green Theatre,
720 Spadina Avenue
Toronto, ON
Tickets $10 at the door. Free for students.
"Avant-bard" singer/songwriter/performer Psoy Korolenko and U of T Professor Anna Shternshis bring to life "lost" Yiddish songs of the Holocaust in this all-new concert and lecture program. Written and transcribed by surviving Ukrainian Jewish writers of the Kiev Cabinet for Jewish Culture after the war as a testament to their struggle for survival, these rare Yiddish artifacts were confiscated and hidden by the Soviet government in 1949, and have only recently come to light. Learn about the incredible stories behind these treasures, savour the music and revel in the creativity of Yiddish-speaking Holocaust survivors.

An all-star supergroup resurrects Yiddish songs from World War II that were thought lost to history until U of T professor Anna Shternshis discovered them sealed in Ukrainian archives. From a collection of thousands, the most heartfelt and defiant songs have been selected and arranged for their premieres – featuring Russian singer Psoy Korolenko and the virtuosic trio Loyko from Russia, and acclaimed Canadian artists: singer Sophie Milman, accordionist Shalom Bard, clarinetist Shalom Bard, trumpeter David Buchbinder, and young singer Isaac Rosenberg.
