Chamber Music at Rodeph Sholom celebrates Israel Independence Day with a new program that highlights classical and Klezmer clarinetist Pavel Vinnitsky and the spectacular pianist Daniel Epstein on Friday evening, May 1st, at 8pm in Schnurmacher Chapel at Congregation Rodeph Sholom, 7 West 83rd Street, New York City. In May 2008, Mr. Vinnitsky was featured as the klezmer clarinet and bass clarinet soloist with the Bachanalia String Orchestra of New York in a concert dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel at Merkin Hall, NYC. The May 1st Chamber Music at Rodeph Sholom concert features guest artists Daniel Epstein, piano, Eliot Bailen, cello and Artistic Director, Susan Rotholz, flute, and Pavel Vinnitsky, clarinet, in a "talk-back with the artists" after the concert. The ensemble will play works by Brahms (1833-1897), Haydn (1732-1809), and contemporary composer Paul Schoenfield (1947-), whose works are inspired by his love of Hebrew, as well as a selection of Klezmer pieces. Regulars to the chamber music concerts should note in their calendars the change from Saturday afternoon to Friday evening for this end of season performance. The free concert is open to the public. Please remember to RSVP so that we can provide seating and refreshments for the comfort of everyone. For more information and to RSVP, call the Cantor's Study 646.454.3039.

Anything is possible in Yiddish theatre – but dolls that talk back to you? When artists Zuni Maud and Yosl Cutler created their “Modicut” Yiddish puppet theatre at the end of 1925, it was an instant hit among the Yiddish-speaking masses in New York City, and within a few years they were touring Europe and the Soviet Union to great acclaim. Come hear the fascinating history of this unusual piece of Yiddish culture.
Eddy Portnoy teaches Yiddish language and Jewish literature and culture at Rutgers University. A contributor to The Forward and Tablet Magazine, he writes on Jewish popular culture with an emphasis on Yiddish.

A study of Ashkenazi food that does for Yiddish food what Wex’s book Born to Kvetch did for Yiddish speech, Rhapsody in Schmaltz traces the history and social impact of the cuisine that Yiddish-speaking Jews from Central and Eastern Europe brought to the U.S. and that their American descendants developed and refined. The book looks at how and where these dishes came to be, how they varied from region to region, the role they played in Jewish culture in Europe, and the role that they play in Jewish and more general American culture and foodways today. It traces the pathways of Jewish food from the Bible and Talmud, to Eastern Europe, to its popular landing pads in North America today. With an eye for detail and a healthy dose of humor, Michael Wex also examines how these impact modern culture, from temple to television.
