An international seminar on the traditional music of Eastern European Jewry, to be held July 12-16, 2003 in St. Petersburg, Russia. KlezFest in St. Petersburg," now in its seventh year, is the oldest Klezmer seminar in Russia. The 2003 festival will include master-classes on Yiddish folk songs and Klezmer music, workshops on Yiddish folklore and Yiddish dance, lectures, concerts, and two excursions: "Jewish St. Petersburg" and "Rivers and Canals of St. Petersburg." Our staff will include world-famous musicians -- the world's leading expert on Yiddish dance, violinist, accordion player, vocalist, and ethnomusicologist Michael Alpert from New York, wonderful Yiddish singer and storyteller Shura Lipovsky from Amsterdam, and the outstanding Klezmer clarinetist from Berlin, Christian Dawid.

The Center of Jewish Education in Ukraine, with the support of the Jewish Communities Development Fund for Russia and Ukraine (USA) and the Canadian Embassy in Ukraine announces the fourth annual Klezfest music festival in Kiev on August 24-29, 2003! Klezfest Ukraine 2003 will be devoted to the study of the traditional performance of Ashkenazi music and its modern interpretation and composition. Special attention will be devoted to methods of promotion of modern Jewish music in the music market. Performers (vocalists and musicians), members of Jewish music bands and composers who use elements of traditional Jewish music are invited to take part in Klezfest Ukraine 2003.

Oplev musikken i et nyt lys : Channe Nussbaum og Øyvind Ougaard optræder sammen med klarinettisten Bjarke Kolerus, som på denne aften er afløser for Mette Smidl.

Bjarke Kolerus tilhører det første kuld af musikere, der afsluttede uddannelsen på Det Danske Folkemusikkonservatorium i 2002. Han har studeret klezmer i USA og indgår herhjemme i mange konstellationer, -bl.a. med sit eget band "The Premium Klezmer Kentucky Boys" og i "Copenhagen Klezmer". Og han er ikke bange for bolden, når den kommer ! På denne aften stiller han frygtløst op som det tredie hjul i Trio Klezmer, -som afløser for Mette Smidl og ved siden af Nussbaum & Ougaard. Der er hermed lagt op til en eksplosiv aften, hvor gnisterne nemt vil kunne komme til at fyge om ørerne på de tilstedeværende tilhørere.

Helsinki Klezmer Festival, the festival of traditional instrumental music of the Yiddish-speaking people is organized for the third time already in Finland. Savoy Theatre as its venue, the event aims to make klezmer music better known in general and to give people a possibility to get to know one of the Europe�s most interesting cultural traditions. Klezmer music has its roots in the medieval Europe, where the Jewish people of the Eastern Europe traveled from town to town in order to play in weddings and other events. By the end of the 18th century klezmer music had become a well-developed music style, gathering influences from the Jewish culture and from outside of it.

Nowadays klezmer music is played almost all around the world, but mostly in the United States and in Europe. Klezmer music is constantly evolving and mixing with other music styles such as jazz and pop music. In order for the style to survive it is still important that there are also bands trying to find out the origins of klezmer music and ways to maintain it as authentic as possible. The authenticity of the music will not bring back the culturally rich community that once lived in the Eastern Europe but will give the listeners a possibility to get a bit closer look at the life of the society that lived at that time.

Virtuoso clarinet player David Krakauer from New York is one of the most influential names in the new Klezmer music scene, blending contemporary jazz into his music.

The concerts will be performed at the Savoy Theatre (Kasarmikatu 46-48). In addition to concerts the program of Helsinki Klezmer Festival will include evening clubs that are held at Kunsthalle Helsinki (Nervanderinkatu 3) right after the music performances.

Freilach mit Kneidlach will be the house band in the evening clubs.

Fajerlech (Lithuania)

Di Naye Kapelye, "The New Band" plays energetic klezmer music without forgetting traditions. Yankl Falk (vocals, clarinet) tours together with Di Naye Kapelye.

The group established in 1971 consists of 18 dancers and singers. Fajerlech depicts many-sided in its performances the past culture and life of Lithuanian - Jewish small villages. Fajerlech has been on numerous tours in best estrades in Europe for example in England,Germany, Belgium and Holland and also in Israel.

Elle s'est perfectionnée à New York aux côtés d'Alicia Svigals (violoniste des "Klezmatics") et joue aujourd'hui avec différents orchestres klezmer en France et en Belgique ("Krupnik", "Yiddish Tanz Reveyvele"). Elle vient d'enregistrer un CD : "Koved" sous le label "Tzadik" de John Zorn.

Cet atelier s'adresse :
- aux participants de nos ateliers 2003/2004,
- aux musiciens qui, possédant une bonne maîtrise de leur instrument, souhaitent se familiariser avec les particularités de la musique klezmer.

Men NU er "Trio Klezmer" i Amager Kulturpunkt

Eller mere præcist i "Cafékino", som er navnet på den hyggelige Café, der ligger umiddelbart foran Amager Bio. Stolte traditioner knytter sig til Amager Kulturpunkt. Store mængder af rigtig god musik har gennem årene lydt i disse lokaler. Og det er med glæde, at Trio Klezmer nu også gør sin entré her på Øresundsvej. Trioen har, efter en pause, givet en stribe koncerter og er netop nu ved at være oppe i fulde omdrejninger. Så det vil være en trio i topform, der møder frem på Amager på fredag !

Alan Bern and Brave Old World will stay for a week in Bordeaux (France) for a series of concerts, lectures and meetings from october 11th to 17th.

Jewish musics, especially klezmer musics played in the Lodz ghetto and musics played by the Shanghaese diaspora, are the core of these residential week in Bordeaux.

Zun mit a regn (sun and rain)—laughter through tears is part and parcel of Yiddish music. Jewish composers devoted a great deal of attention to it and so did Shostakovich.

Jewish Music Projects Foundation presents works in this style by Shostakovich (1908-1975) and his friends Weinberg (Vainberg) (1919-1996) and Veniamin Basner (1925-1996) in a series of concerts in the Netherlands.

World War Two and the reign of terror in the Soviet Union had a deep impact on the composers. They expressed themselves in their music. The music of the persecuted Jewish people was their source of inspiration - an act of courage in a period when open pronouncements could have fatal consequences. It was often years before the works could be premiered. Now these extraordinary and intense works will be performed in the Netherlands by an ensemble of specialised musicians:

Koncert jidish punk pop m. Gæstesolist fra irak

Channe Nussbaum kan opleves sammen med Spielniks på Café Liva i Nyhavn, København, hvor der vil blive spillet opdateret jødisk Klezmerpop med indslag fra den arabiske verden via gæstesolisten Aida Nadÿeem Rahaman.

Spielniks er et fantastisk orkester, der gennem de sidste10 år har brystet sig af diverse lækre gæstesolister. Bla Billy Cross, Morten Carlsen...... Denne gang en sangerinde ! Aida Nadÿeem Rahaman bor i Spanien og er født i Irak. Hun er uddannet på det kgl. musikkonservatorium i KBH som Oboist, og har i en årrække skrevet og sunget nylavet elektronisk arabisk musik,en genre hun kalder " Arab tronic". The idea of this event came from the Jewish ensemble "Dona" (Moscow) and their producer Anatoly Pinsky, so the seminar has also become known as "Dona-Fest". The festival will bring together more then 60 musicians from the former USSA and Europe. The gala concert of the First International Festival of Jewish music in Moscow will consist of completely new material which will be prepared during the 3 days of seminar. It will take place at the Jewish Theatre Shalom.

The leading teachers of the event are Merlin Shepherd (world known klezmer musician, who has developed a unique method of teaching klezmer instrumentalists by ear) and Polina Shepherd (leading Jewish choir composer in the former USSR who bases her vocal teaching on instrumental ornamentation and Jewish modes).

Amongst the organisers and teachers there will be representatives of the "old" Yiddish tradition (Arkady Gendler, Ukraine) and of the newest generation of Russian and ex-Russian klezmorim (Mark Kovnatsky, Germany; Alina Ivakh, Kazan; Alexey Rozov, Evgenya Slavina, Moscow).

Zun mit a regn (sun and rain)—laughter through tears is part and parcel of Yiddish music. Jewish composers devoted a great deal of attention to it and so did Shostakovich.

Jewish Music Projects Foundation presents works in this style by Shostakovich (1908-1975) and his friends Weinberg (Vainberg) (1919-1996) and Veniamin Basner (1925-1996) in a series of concerts in the Netherlands.

World War Two and the reign of terror in the Soviet Union had a deep impact on the composers. They expressed themselves in their music. The music of the persecuted Jewish people was their source of inspiration - an act of courage in a period when open pronouncements could have fatal consequences. It was often years before the works could be premiered. Now these extraordinary and intense works will be performed in the Netherlands by an ensemble of specialised musicians:

Zun mit a regn (sun and rain)—laughter through tears is part and parcel of Yiddish music. Jewish composers devoted a great deal of attention to it and so did Shostakovich.

Jewish Music Projects Foundation presents works in this style by Shostakovich (1908-1975) and his friends Weinberg (Vainberg) (1919-1996) and Veniamin Basner (1925-1996) in a series of concerts in the Netherlands.

World War Two and the reign of terror in the Soviet Union had a deep impact on the composers. They expressed themselves in their music. The music of the persecuted Jewish people was their source of inspiration - an act of courage in a period when open pronouncements could have fatal consequences. It was often years before the works could be premiered. Now these extraordinary and intense works will be performed in the Netherlands by an ensemble of specialised musicians:

Yale Strom will be in Warsaw to present his film "L'CHAYIM COMRADE STALIN!" which examines the formation, history and current status of the "Jewish Autonomous Region" - better known as Birobidzhan. The JAR was the first and only secular Yiddish state created 20 years before the State of Israel specifically for Soviet Jews and Jews in the rest of Eastern Europe. Yale will be present after the screening for Q&A and to perform a few klezmer tunes (violin) after the screening. The film is in competition and part of the WARSZAWSKI MIEDZYNARODOWY FESTIWAL FILMOWY (Warsaw Jewish Film Festival). The film will be screened at the Kino Muranow on Ulica Gen. W. The Moscow Centre of Culture and Education "Euro-Class" announces the 2nd International Jewish Music festival-seminar "Dona-Fest, 2006" which will take place in Moscow from March, 2006 (dates to be confirmed). "Dona Fest" will take place in some of the most prestigious concert halls in Moscow and will include appearances by the most esteemed performers of Jewish music in Russia, the CIS and the Baltic states, as well as foreign stars of Klezmer. Along with the concert programme, "Dona Fest" will also include an International music seminar, which will be lead by the leading specialists in the field of Jewish music and culture (Klezmer music, Yiddish songs, etc.) The seminar programme includes:

• vocal and instrumental master classes;
• lectures on Yiddish and Ashkenazi culture;
• Jewish theatre and drama classes;
• Jewish folk dance;
• regular jam sessions;
• round table discussions, exchanging experience and knowledge;

The teachers:

• Grammy Award nominee and world famous Yiddish singer Adrianne Cooper (USA),

Een nieuw geluid van Di Fidl-Kapelye!
Project "Trumpets for Di Fidl-Kapelye"

Bekend om haar authentieke klezmer-sound is Di Fidl-Kapelye nu op weg naar nieuwe horizonten: blazende klezmer-experts componeren speciaal voor de snaren-kapelye nieuwe stukken.

5 beroemde klezmer-blazers hebben de afgelopen maanden gewerkt aan nieuw repertoire speciaal voor Di Fidl-Kapelye geschreven. Het project begon met drie trompettisten: Frank London (van o.a. de Klezmatics), Gijs Levelt (o.a. Amsterdam Klezmer Band) en Susan Watts (o.a. de Klezmer Brass Allstars). Inmiddels is het uitgegroeid tot een blazers-voor-strijkers-project, waarin ook klarinettist Yankl Falk (di Naye Kapelye) en saxofonist Job Chajes (Amsterdam Klezmer Band) componeren.

The Fireflies
On Monday 17th April (Easter Monday) at 12pm, The Fireflies duo (Fiona and Ruti) will play in The Round Gallery, Siamsa Tire, Tralee, Co. Kerry as part of the Samhloaicht Easter Festival. Lots of other good stuff going on there too, it's a fab arts festival and worth a visit.

Later that day, at 3pm, Ruti is teaching a Klezmer dance workshop also in Siamsa Tire, lots of freilach and bulgar steps for you to take home and practise!!

Later that self same day Ruti and Fiona will be reappearing in a completely different county!! At 8pm at Fitzpatrick's in Kilcrohane, Sheep's Head, West Cork. Part of the Craic on the Coast, a great little music festival with fun and seaside galore.

The Amsterdam Jewish Music Projects Foundation will be taking part in
the Russian Centennial Celebration for Dmitri Shostakovich with the
programme "Zun mit a regn" (Sun and Rain) that is to be performed at the
Shostakovich Conferences in St. Petersburg on 12 and 13 October. The
programme, which premiered in the Netherlands, includes chamber music and
songs composed by Shostakovich himself and by his friends Mieczyslaw
Weinberg and Veniamin Basner. The central source of inspiration for the
works on the programme is the music of the Jewish people, oppressed in
Russia during the Stalin regime. The works will be performed by singer
Sovali (soprano), violinist Grigory Sedukh, cellist Alexander Oratovski and
pianist Paul Prenen. The performances are supported by the Wilhelmina E.
Jansen Fund.
