If you are a fan of Michael Wex (which is to say, if you have ever met him, heard him speak, or read his previous best-seller), and you live in Houston, you will be quite pleased to know that the new book, Just say nu is out.
November 11 - Houston Jewish book and arts fair
Why is Wex so funny? I blame it on Alberta, or at least the Calgary Hebrew Day School, which we both attended (me for just a few early years, insufficient for an adequate humor education, in the early 1960s). [ari]

From Flory Jagoda:
Please join me for a splendid afternoon of Jewish Sephardic music on
Sunday, April 6, 2008 at 4:00 pm.
The one hour concert will be at Congregation Etz Hayim, the synagogue that has been my religious home since I first came to America in 1946.
I was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Before the madness of the Second World War, 14,000 Jewish people called Sarajevo home and it was known throughout Europe as /Chico Yerushalayim/ (Little Jerusalem) for its thriving Sephardic community. Today, sadly, there are only 160 Jewish survivors living there and most of them are elderly and ill.
They need our help and I am committed to sending them the help that they need.
To Buy Tickets and/or make a donation, please contact:
Congregation Etz Hayim, 2920 Arlington Blvd, Arlington, VA 22204
703.979.4466 / fax: 703.979.4458
www.etzhayim.net
Checks can be made to: Congregation Etz Hayim - Sarajevo Benefit Fund
Tickets are $20, with a discount of $5 off for seniors and students.
Children 12 and under are free. Please reserve your tickets in advance by March 31st .

The Guava Rugelach Festival, produced by Temple Israel along with a broad variety of community partners, aims to showcase what it sounds like when Jews from different corners settle together under palm trees once again as in biblical Israel, but instead in a tropical melting pot positioned along the Atlantic Ocean.

Monajat is inspired by Selihot, the poetic prayers of forgiveness recited during the month preceding the Jewish High Holidays according to Middle Eastern tradition. This period of deep reflection and spiritual preparation serves as a backdrop for Dardashti’s time-specific concert and program. The first-time U.S. presentation of Monajat combines participatory workshops, talks, prayer services, and other educational programs to enhance the spiritual and cultural experience. Dardashti, a performer and anthropologist of Iranian descent, re-imagines the Selihot ritual in collaboration with an acclaimed ensemble of Jewish and Muslim musicians, an electronic soundscape, and dynamic video projections by video artist and designer Dmitry Kmelnitsky.
Dardashti’s acclaimed ensemble of musicians includes Omer Avital (oud, bass, vocals), Amir ElSaffar (santour, vocals), Tal Ronen (bass, vocals) and Dafer Tawil (percussion, violin, ney, oud, vocals).
The Foundation for Jewish Culture and its league of performing arts presenters have commissioned Monajat (Fervent Prayer), a multimedia concert by composer, singer, and scholar Galeet Dardashti which will tour the United States in September 2011. Monajat, an evening of Middle Eastern musical poetry, inaugurates the New Jewish Culture Network, an initiative to create and deliver outstanding Jewish music and other art forms to audiences in the U.S. and beyond.

Thursday, April 25, 2013, 8:00pm
Old Cabell Auditorium
University of Virginia
Charlottesville, VA
The first part of the concert will feature a trio performance by Segelstein, Horowitz, and Rubin. From 1992-94, the acclaimed duo Rubin & Horowitz performed throughout Europe. Their pioneering CD, Bessarabian Symphony: Early Jewish Instrumental Music, is credited with having initiated the historically-informed performance practice movement in klezmer music. It was called “very pure ... authoritative” by the Wall Street Journal, and “a major document of the so-called ‘klezmer revival’” in the journal, Ethnomusicology. This will be their first joint performance since 1994 and the first performance as a trio with Cookie Segelstein. After intermission, the trio will be joined by the UVA Klezmer Ensemble in a performance of Segelstein’s and Horowitz’s repertoire.
Tickets for the Klezmer Ensemble performance are $10 for adults and $5 for students. UVA students may request one complimentary ticket up until midnight prior to the concert.

Dudu Tassa

Russian House
307 E. 5th Street
Austin, TX
With his band, The Kuwatis, Dudu Tassa summons the work of two Iraqi-Jewish composers, Daoud and Saleh Al Kuwaiti (who happen to also be his grandfather and his great-uncle), to create an Israeli pop-rock informed by Arabic tradition.
“It was interesting to do,” Tassa recalls. “I was ready for something new. I was bored with Israeli pop music. And this struck something in me. I asked my mom for recordings of her father and I went to Israel radio to see what they had. Honestly, it wasn’t easy to listen to them – my ears weren’t used to such sad music and the melodies were difficult.”
In the end, he listened to over 200 pieces of music by the brothers for his Al Kuwaiti project. His choices turned out to be pieces he knew.
“I connected to those songs my mother sang when I was a child. I’d listen and I knew them I picked songs that I thought I could take to the West, where I could imagine harmonies in the music.”

KCJO will perform upbeat tunes and waltzes that originated from Eastern Europe and were played by the great Klezmer musicians of that period such as Dave Tarras, Naftule Brandwein, Ziggy Elman, Abe Ellstein, and others. KCJO will improvise and jazz up the “old” Klezmer tunes win the style reminiscent of Klezmer bands from the 1930’s and 1950’s.
