Dust off that instrument, warm up your vocal chords and start tapping your feet. Join Harvey Niebulski, Martin Morgenbesser and a host of other Klezmer musicians in a participatory Northwest Folklife Klezmer Jam this Sunday morning, May 30th, from 11:00 AM till 12:30 PM at the Seattle Center's Fisher Green.
If you were with us last year, you know how much fun it is. Learn twisty new tunes and enjoy the old chestnuts. Share with us your Klezmer melodies and interpretations. Make a joyful noise!
Don't play or sing? Come dance or simply listen. There are many ways to participate!
See you at Fisher Green!
Still wanting more after this Sunday night's Northwest Folklife Balkan bash? Grab your latte, chase off that hangover and boogie the morning after to "Disciples of Goldenshteyn," a trio playing old-time Bessarabian Wedding Band music.
Andrew Ehrlich (violin), Milton From (clarinet) and Martin Morgenbesser (accordion) will wake you up with tunes we've learned from our beloved teacher and personal hero, clarinetist German Goldenshteyn. This lively and soulful traditional dance music blends Jewish, Moldovan, Roma, Romanian and Ukrainian influences into a heady Klezmer brew once performed throughout Bessarabia for weddings and communal celebrations.
"Disciples of Goldenshteyn" will perform at Northwest Folklife, Seattle Center, this Monday, Memorial Day, May 31st from 11:00 till 11:30 AM at the Exhibition Hall Lawn Stage.
To learn more about German Goldenshteyn and the music he plays go to Interview with a Bessarabian Klezmer, German Goldenstyn. German Goldenshteyn teaches every year at KlezKanada. Check it out! Learn from our master!

Mizrahi Piyutim: Middle Eastern Prayer Poetry
Join Galeet Dardashti for an interactive evening that introduces attendees to the Sephardi piyut traditions from the Middle East and North Africa. This evening will not only allow you to hear and learn a few of these beautiful and poetic songs but will provide you with a cultural and historical lens for understanding why the paytanim (poets) wrote them and continued composing them up until the last century. This lecture will also highligh the important ways in which the music of these piyutim draws from secular Arabic and Middle Eastern music. Galeet will perform and teach a number of piyutim representing the Iraqi, Sephardi-Yerushalmi, Moroccan, and Iranian traditions.

Rimon:Master Classes in Judaic Studies with Galeet Dardashti
Performing Arab and Middle Eastern Music in Israel
Based on Galeet Dardashti's doctoral dissertation research in anthropology, these Master Classes chronicle the recent mainstreaming of Middle Eastern and Arab-influenced art music (musika etnit yisraelit) in the Israeli public sphere. Long-forgotten Iraqi septuagenarian musicians are only now asked to share their unique knowledge with receptive Israeli students and audiences; Palestinian and Jewish Israelis have formed a range of Middle Eastern and Arab-influenced bands; Israeli groups are performing interpretations of the music of Egyptian legends such as Oum Kalthoum and Farid El-Atrash for packed concert halls; and recently some of Israel's most noted secular rock singers have recorded their own renditions of Middle Eastern piyutim (Jewish praise songs). These developments over the past fifteen years represent an historical shift in Israeli cultural politics and indicate an openness to cultural diversity and a decline of the homogeneous Israeli national cultural identity that government policy had strongly encouraged since the State's inception. Through the music scene, Galeet examines this unique nationalist movement in Israel, examining how scholars can represent some of the complex cultural realities of this global era.

“KLEZMERQUERQUE” Albuquerque New Mexico’s annual Klezmer music and dance festival celebrates its seventh year February 12-15, 2009 (Presidents Day weekend).
On Saturday morning, February 14th from 9:30am-11:00am the Strauss Warschauer Duo will lead “SHABBOS, MUSIC AND YIDDISH”, a hands-on workshop of Hassidic Niggunim (melodies) and Yiddish Sabbath songs for singers and instrumentalists. No previous experience necessary. All ages, levels and backgrounds welcome. Brin Ingber will teach dances from the Eastern European Jewish wedding repertoire including Rebbe Elimelech tanz and Kayzad merakdim. Classes cost $20-general and $16 for seniors, students and fixed income. From noon-2pm there will be a catered lunch. After the catered luncheon Brin Ingber will present "Why Jews Aren't Just People of the Book" with rare and historic dance illustrations and music for Jewish dance in far flung communities through the ages. Following her powerpoint presentation there will be time for questions. The price for the ‘Lunch ‘n Presentation’ is an $8-$15 suggested donation.
On Saturday afternoon from 2:15pm-3:45pm the Duo will lead “MAKING YOUR INSTRUMENT SING IN YIDDISH”, a hands-on workshop for everyone. Again, all are welcome. Price for this class is $20-general admission and $16 for seniors, students and fixed income.
On Saturday evening at 7pm Brin Ingber will perform two dances. “The Argument” gives a modern twist to the classic story of Abraham about to sacrifice his son Isaac. The dance will be accompanied by the chanting of Brin Ingber’s sister Rabbi Deborah Brin, who is also the Rabbi of Congregation Nahalat Shalom. “Roles Not Taken” a dance combining music theatre, ballet and Israeli folk dance presents a surprising view on issues of Jewish identity. The evening culminates with a concert by the Strauss/Warschauer Duo, “Dem Fideles Neshome” (The Fiddle’s Soul) and a dance party. Brin Ingber will also lead dances that she taught in her morning class. Price for this event is $18-in advance and $20-general, $18-seniors and students at the door.

3 Leg Torso and the Beaverton Symphony Orchestra, led by Maestro Travis Hatton combine forces for an evening of Hungarian and Eastern European themed music.
The Beaverton Symphony will open with:
Brahms Hungarian Dance #6,
Bartók, Hungarian Sketches
Kachaturian, Masquerade Suite
The members of 3 Leg Torso reunite with Maestro Travis Hatton to perform original and traditional pieces arranged for full symphony orchestra. The ensemble worked with Mr. Hatton in 2008 while the conductor was working with the musicians of the Metropolitan Youth Symphony.
"We really enjoyed collaborating with Maestro Hatton and the MYS", says accordionist and co-leader/founder of 3LT, Courtney Von Drehle. "Travis's acute attention to detail makes for a spirited marriage of the World Music that 3 Leg Torso is known for with the orchestral lushness and depth of sonic possibilities offered by a full symphonic orchestra."
To further expand the quintet's history of performing and collaborating with large symphonic ensembles, Béla R. Balogh, violinist and co-leader of 3LT, had been searching for conductors and orchestras in the region to collaborate with and reuniting with Maestro Hatton was a great idea and welcomed opportunity.
Says Balogh: "Travis was a natural fit for 3 Leg Torso. We had successfully worked with him in the past, and his understanding of the music was elemental in creating a show that was thrilling for both performers and listeners"

This solo performance is the California premiere, and features full-length projected animation. It’s directed by Maureen Towey, who helped to develop the earliest incarnation of the show, for which Rabins received a prestigious Six Points Fellowship.

3 Leg Torso
Monday, May 18th, 7 PM
(Doors open at 6 PM)
Lake Theatre & Cafe
106 N. State St.
Lake Oswego, OR
$15.00 / All Ages!
The Lake Theatre holds a special place in the heart of 3 Leg Torso’s violinist and native of Lake Oswego, Béla R. Balogh. As a child, Béla saw his first ever movie at The Lake Theatre, and later in 5th grade, he had his first “date", going to see the film "You Light Up My Life" with a girl who was in the 6th grade. Unfortunately, the next morning, his date broke up with him because he wouldn't kiss her in the theater in front of all her friends.
When 3 Leg Torso performs at the Lake Theatre on Monday, May 18th, it will be another first for Béla and the band: the first time they have ever performed in this inviting and intimate space. It will be good to be back to this place of many formative experiences.
3 Leg Torso is coming “home†to the Lake Theatre on the heels of a regional tour with the Rogue Valley Symphony, who performed symphonic arrangements of the ensemble's repertoire. The shows generated record attendance and opened the ears and eyes of many new fans with unique and inspiring music.
We Look forward to seeing you at the Lake Theatre & Cafe!

Craig Judelman has become well known in the northwest for his fine old-time musicianship. Next week he returns with a project of Yiddish music, joined by the fine Latvian singer, Sasha Lurje.
Lebedik: shlepping goles
Jewish history has always involved migration, it has never had a culture that only existed in one place. People have moved around and lived in different lands, always dreaming of another part of the world. Living in diaspora (goles), Jews dreamt of the promised land in Israel and the golden land of the american dream. They carried this weight- schlepping goles, through their travels and the longing and displacement of their lives are retold in the songs.
Based in Berlin this new project by an international trio rekindles the songs and stories of our migrations, looking to our art and heritage for a context to the challenges so many immigrants and refugees face in our world today. The musicians in the band come from three homes for
Yiddish music: Sasha Lurje is a singer from Latvia, Craig Judelman is a fiddler from the USA and Ira Shiran is an accordionist from Israel. (For this gig they are thrilled to feature special guest Keith Judelman on accordion).
Together they explore the transformations of Yiddish music, from the Shtetls of the Old World through its journey to the city, and the new lands of America and Israel. Retracing the steps of our ancestors through the songs that sustained them, this program makes sure that this tradition remains lebedik - alive and lively!
