I'm excited to tell you about a new musical adventure that Freylach Time Klezmer Band and some local Old Time musicians are planning. We are playing music together, experimenting with blending the genres and creating some very fun music. Our first public event will be a free concert Sat Dec 20 at the Broad Street Cafe in Durham. In a rare presentation of rockin' Jewish music on the San Mateo County (Calif.) Coastside, two world-class ensembles will perform a concert on Sunday, November 7, at noon, in support of Half Moon Bay's Coastside Jewish Community, at the Oceano Hotel & Ballroom in Princeton-By-The-Sea (30 minutes south of San Francisco). Jhos & Julie's Band of Angels will perform folk to rock to Israeli, Yiddish, Sephardic, and Cantorial selections, and acclaimed Bay Area bluegrass band Kitchen Help will deliver traditional songs and heartfelt harmonies inspired by the bluegrass masters.
Tickets are $36 general admission, $50-100 preferred seating, and $10 for children. Light lunch will be provided and there will be a no-host bar.

The Ger Mandolin Orchestra is the brainchild of Israeli-American Avner Yonai, whose search for his family roots in Poland led him to a tattered photograph of his grandfather and two other relatives playing in a pre-WWII Jewish mandolin orchestra in the Polish town of Gora Kalwaria (Ger in Yiddish).
The Ger Mandolin Orchestra is led by acoustic music innovator Mike Marshall, a multiple Grammy nominee/winner for his work over the last 35 years with such artists as David Grisman, Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, and many more. Marshall is joined in the Ger Mandolin Orchestra by an all-star cast of ten mandolinists from Canada, the US and Europe, including Chris Acquavella, Tim Connell, Caterina Lichtenberg, Barry Mitterhoff, Brian Oberlin, Dana Rath, Adam Roskiewicz, Eric Stein, Jeff Warschauer, and Radim Zenkl. With their collective stylistic mastery including everything from Jewish, Balkan and Latin music to bluegrass, jazz, and classical, this is one of the most formidable mandolin supergroups ever assembled.

The history of the klezmer revival is in large part the story of Andy Statman, whose 1979 album Jewish Klezmer Music, recorded with Zev Feldman, literally announced the return of the forgotten music of the Old World shtetls to the outside world. Since then, Andy (who learned the sonorities of the music firsthand from immigrant-era musician Dave Tarras) has immersed himself in the music of the Hasidim. Whether he is playing mandolin or one of the clarinets that Tarras bequeathed to him, Andy performs a singular, contemporary fusion of Jewish, jazz, and Americana styles, a genre that this National Heritage fellow and Grammy nominee owns with his longtime musical partners, bassist Jim Whitney and drummer Larry Eagle.

Performing traditional Jewish music, bluegrass, and Americana on both mandolin and clarinet, Andy Statman is a master of respecting and innovating musical traditions. In 2012, the National Endowment for the Arts awarded Andy with a National Heritage Fellowship, the nation's highest honor in the folk and traditional arts. He has performed and recorded with an incredible range of artists including Itzhak Perlman, David Grisman, Ricky Scaggs, and David Bromberg. Andy will be performing with his trio, Jim Whitney, bass, and Larry Eagle, drums.
