Klezmer jam at the Workmen's Circle, 6-8 PM . We hope you will come and enjoy a great jam led by clarinetist Michael Winograd.
We have been playing mainly from printed music, which we will have available in C and B-flat. All levels of players are welcome.
The WC is at 1762 Beacon St in Brookline, about 5 blocks west of Washington Square, which is about 12 blocks west of Coolidge Corner. The Green Line Beacon Street route goes right to the WC (just tell the conductor, "Ich gay in Arbeter Ring," and they'll know where to let you off).
We recommend a contribution of $5-$10, but no one should be kept away on account of money.
So, as I announced last week, this year's NEC klezmer institute was cancelled.
But.....since there was a fairly well-publicized concert scheduled for
Thursday night, July 24 at 7:30 PM in room G14 in the St. Botolph Building (241 St.
Botolph St., Boston)
And since people might show up for that concert anyway...
I've decided to host a klezmer and Yiddish jam session that night, which will
at least feature myself and Michael Winograd.
And if there's an audience, we can pretend it's a concert. A really good
concert.
One word of warning - If you want to get in, be sure to arrive before eight -
they lock the doors (street entrance) to the building at 8.
Also, I think they lock the parking lot entrance even earlier.
Also, it wouldn't hurt to maybe bring something to eat or drink
(non-alcoholic, but we can pretend).

One of the best Klezmer/yiddish culture camps in North America is the annual "KlezKanada", held each years in the spectacular Laurentian mountains north of Montreal. Organized, in part, by the folks in Brave Old World, the program is always spectacular.
Events include lectures, a mini film festival, and of course, intensive workshops in singing, klezmer music, theatre, and dance. The "Kidz for Klez" program is also great. This is the best summer camp in the world (in fact, the event is hosted at a Jewish summer camp). Register early to get the best bunks.
Although most events start on the 20th, today is the day to arrive, get oriented, and get in some preliminary jamming.
For further information, visit the site website, www.klezkanada.com
So come on down. For particulars and to download a registration form, visit fishl kutner's site www.derbay.org. Baltimore's the place to be this September. Kumt, kinderlekh, kumt.

Fiery, fearless, and stunningly modern, Yiddish poetry exploded onto
the
literary scene in the late nineteenth century and flourished throughout
the first half of the last century. In America, Europe, and later
Israel, Yiddish poets captured in luminous, and oftentimes bold and
experimental verse, the complex personal and communal struggles of life
in a rapidly changing world. Masters of language, they transformed
Yiddish into a powerful medium of poetic expression.
This program is funded, in part, by the Albert E. Marks Charitable
Trust
and the J.T. Zuckerman Fund of the Workmen's Circle.

Dear klezmorim
We are back from KlezKamp, bursting with energy from the week of wonderful Jewish music and culture. We are sure this energy will rub off on everyone who attends our January Jam.
The January jam at the Workmen's Circle is Sunday January 4, 6-8 PM. Our regular jam leader, Michael Winograd, played at the opening night staff concert and at the closing night's festivities with Frank London's Klezmer Brass Allstars. Michael is out of town January 4, but we'll have a great jam led by Jim Guttmann, bassist with the Klezmer Conservatory Band, and just returned from teaching at KlezKamp.
We have been playing mainly from printed music, which we will have available in C and B-flat. All levels of players are welcome.
The WC is at 1762 Beacon Street in Brookline, about 5 blocks west of Washington Square, which is about 12 blocks west of Coolidge Corner. The Green Line Beacon Street route goes right to the WC (just tell the conductor, "Ich gay in Arbeter Ring," and they'll know where to let you off).

Our first North of Boston Klezmer Brunch was a great success. We had a very
nice instrumental mix-- a couple of violins, a couple of clarinets, a tsimbl
and a keyboard.
And we made some beautiful music, which is what it is all all about!
NEXT NOB Klezmer BRUNCH DATE: Sunday, Jan 11th, 2004!
TIME: around 12:30 PM
PLACE: In the vicinity of our prior Reading, MA location, will update closer
to the date..
As usual, all instruments are welcome, but for this next session I am
especially interested in getting a bass and a singer.
So, please come, and if you cannot make it , pass this along to your
friends.
We have another jam session coming up this week. Our last one was dazzled by list member Richard Lecharsky's amazing singing! Not to mention some beautiful violin, accordion and miscellaneous percussion. Hope to see more of you this week!
Wednesday, Jan. 14: A FREE monthly klezmer jam session, hosted by clarinetist Margot Leverett, is held at Astoria Center of Israel, 27-35 Crescent Street, Astoria (N or W to 30th Ave) , 7:30-9:30 pm. All levels welcome, feel free to come listen, play or dance! (718) 278-2680.

The jams are getting better and better - in January we had a veritable team of amazing clarinetists, and another brilliant singer. Somebody bellydanced, but I'm not telling who. What next?

the Rozhinke Retreat
Reclaiming the Cantorial Art for the 21st Century
AUGUST 21-24, 2005
Kutshers Country Club, New York
Now in its third year, the "Rozhinke Retreat" is an effort to preserve and continue the great Cantorial art tradition of yesteryear. At the turn of the Millenium, we have seen many Jewish cultural revivals: Yiddish, Klezmer... and Hazzanut is due a revival of its own. This retreat has its roots in the great Cantorial stylings of such renowned Hazzanim as Yossele Rosenblatt, David Kousevitsky, Zavel Kwartin and many others—with an emphasis not on historical examination, but rather living reproduction of an art form which is so intrinsically Jewish, and so passionate, so filled with pathos and sweetness, that it can only be described as "Rozhinke"—the sweet sound of raisins and almonds.
NOB (North of Boston) jam/brunch is Sunday June 19, 7-9 pm (Note new time) at Steve Rauch's house in Watertown: 172 Bellevue Rd (at the corner of Bellevue and Common St. on the hill from Mt. Auburn to Belmont/Cushing Sq). This jam may continue in the summer - to be decided at June jam.
There is a piano, though keyboard players are welcome to bring a portable keyboard in case more than one pianist shows up.

The Weimar Klezmer Wochen, runs this year from July 23 through August 18 in Weimar, Germany.
The Weimar workshops are for experienced musicians who enjoy learning by ear, small class sizes, and intensive focus. Most of the classes are team-taught in an atmosphere of musical and intellectual exploration. The evenings are dedicated to public jam sessions and dances in the cafes and markets of Weimar. The student body is truly international, coming from all over Europe, North America, and even Asia. For more information about the individual workshops, faculty, dates, costs, etc., please visit our website. Thanks!
It's the 10th anniversary of a great klezmer gathering. Musicians gather on the 21st, everyone else on the 24th.
We'll post more details here as they come together towards the event.

We had to change the jam to Sunday Feb 12 since we figured many people would want to watch the Super Bowl, even though the Patriots are not playing. You may remember that last year, the Invisible I-95 Foxboro Shetl Marching Band provided a stirring rendition of the Bobover Wedding March during the half-time show. Numerous sportscasters noted the inspirational impact this had on the Patriots.
This year's Super Bowl mysteriously does not include the Patriots (instead it is the Shtolers vs. the Yamfalks), but it does feature the Rolling Stones, and it is rumored that the Detroit Auto-Klez Ensemble will open for the Stones.
At any rate, come play music 7-9 pm on Sunday Feb. 12, 2006 at the Workmen's Circle, at 1762 Beacon Street in Brookline, about 5 blocks west of Washington Square, which is about 12 blocks west of Coolidge Corner, right on the Green Line Beacon Street route.

Klezmer Jam Sunday December 2
Workmen's Circle building, 1762 Beacon St., Brookline
7:00 - 9:00pm
It's a place to enjoy the wonderful legacy of Klezmer music in an informal and friendly atmosphere. We play from music, available at the jam. We have a variety of instruments, and welcome players at all levels. Keyboardists should bring electric keyboards if possible.
Once again the Patriots have shown themselves unable to accommodate our jam schedule. We have agreed to postpone the jam. In exchange, the halftime show will include a klezmer performance by a group to be chosen at random from an unknown drawing at a secret location.
Klezmer Jam Sunday will be Feb. 10 instead of Feb. 3 because of the Super Bowl.

For the new year, our January klezmer jam is Sunday January 8, not January 1, since we figure people may still be celebrating.
We play 7-9 pm at the Workmen's Circle 1762 Beacon St. Brookline. Pianists
should bring keyboards. Music is available for purchase.
Well, it happens, the Patriots get to the Super Bowl and then the klezmorim get invited to participate. Rumor has it that Loren Sklamberg will sing the National Anthem and that the Yeshiva University Marching Band will perform at halftime. Even if that doesn't really happen, the Hub-Klez will be likely glued to their TVs.
So, the February jam will be Feb 12 Sunday 7-9 pm at the Workmen's Circle.
1762 Beacon St. Brookline.
Pianists should bring keyboards. Music is available for purchase.
Nu, the March jam will be March 4 Sunday 7-9 pm at the Workmen's Circle. 1762 Beacon St. Music available for purchase.

Remembering German Goldenshteyn. Lace up your dancing shoes for an evening of shers, bulgars, freylekhs, horas and more, danced to the music of clarinetist German Goldenshteyn. Prior to his untimely death in 2006, Goldenshteyn taught and performed widely, influencing a generation of young musicians around the world to perform his Ottoman-inflected Bessarabian klezmer repertoire.
Tonight's Tanshoyz features master dance leader Michael Alpert, and a live klezmer band led by Goldenshteyn clarinet protege Alex Kontorovich. Featuring a special performance by the Goldenshteyn Kompanye—a new ensemble led by clarinetist Naum Goldenshteyn (German's grand-nephew), who recently relocated to New York from Israel. Also performing are Dan Blacksberg (trombone), Christina Crowder (accordion), Aaron Alexander (percussion), Brian Glassman (bass) and Pete Rushefsky (tsimbl/cimbalom)

Sunday, September 25, 1:00-4:15pm.
Art House Gallery & Cultural Center,
2905 Shattuck Ave,
Berkeley, CA 94705
Each event will have two sessions The first session will be a 90-minute klezmer instrumental workshop for musicians with little or no klezmer experience but who are proficient on their instruments. It will be taught by an experienced klezmer musician and teacher, and will include playing tunes with charts, getting familiar with klezmer techniques, and learning some tunes by ear at a slow pace.
After a short break, there will be a 90 minute klezmer jam session for those with at least intermediate familiarity with playing klezmer and/or jamming. After the leader begins the session with a warm up tune or two, musicians will take turns "calling" a tune, with everyone learning new tunes by ear or enjoying playing/improvising on familiar ones. The leader will provide guidance for pace, transitions, and ensure an overall smoothly run and fun evening!
Come for both sessions or just one. Refreshments provided. Donation of $10-$20 requested. Reservations not necessary but greatly appreciated, please email jams[at]klezcalifornia.org and indicate what instrument you play and which event and which session(s) you plan to attend. We will also add you to a special mailing list through which you will receive more information, including who will teach/lead each event.
Over the next year, we will try out several models of workshops and jams.Your feedback is critical so let us know your preferences!

Our next klezmer jam is back to relaxed mostly request format, Wednesday, January 17th, from 7:30 - about 10, with a soup and snack break at 9. Please bring finger food potluck items or beverages to share. We meet at 9705 1st Ave NW, Seattle. I have sheet music for most everything although I hope we will do more by ear as the year progresses.
This month's inspirational listening is the Chicago Klezmer Ensemble The Chicago Klezmer Ensemble - Early Recordings (Full Album), with almost an hour of fine klezmer music. Thank you to Joe Bowbeer who suggested I create a youtube playlist of the various links I have posted. Feel free to check out or subscribe to it at Klez Chaos inspiration - YouTube. The new link is included in the playlist as well.
