Soulful virtuosic and and joy to listen to, Shirim is the ultimate
klezmer concert experience. Thr group's top selling klezmer/classical
recording, Klezmer Nutcracker, is the basis for the annual NPR special
"The Golden Dreydl." Shirim has performed internationally captivating
a diverse audience with it's rocking renditions of classic klezmer
music and ingenious arrangements of klezmerized Tchaikovsky, Brahms and
Mahler. The band evokes the seething fervor and estatic joy of the
Jewish minstrels who kept people dancing, crying and laughing in the
shtetls of Eastern Europe for hundreds of years.
Wholesale Klezmer Band
A community celebration of the Jewish festival of lights will be held on Friday, December 19, and will feature a live performance of the The Wholesale Klezmer Band. This is the second time Westminster West has hosted this Channakah celebration. The first was a wonderful success with hot latkes, joyous dancing, stories shared and the lights of many menorahs filling the windows and brightening hearts.
The celebration will once again include a pot luck dinner, dreidle playing, storytelling, and candle lighting. Latkes - a traditional Channakah potato pancake- will be provided. The event, which is free of charge, will be held at the Westminster West Congregational Church at 5:30 p.m. on December 19. For more information call 387-5788

A Southwestern celebration of Klezmer music and dance into
the 21st century: featuring a weekend of concerts, dance
parties, classes and lectures on the music and dance of the
Eastern European Jewish People. February 20th through
February 22nd, 2004.
This year's featured performer: Margot Leverett, world-
renown virtuoso Klezmer clarinetist and saxophonist.
Presented by Congregation Nahalat Shalom (Inheritance of
Peace congregation) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA.

The Jewish Music & Cultural Festival (formerly KlezFest)

in Syracuse, NY. It is FREE! Headliners are "Margot
Leverett & the Klezmer Mountain Boys," "Simply Tsfat" from
Israel, and "Sruli and Lisa's Children's Workshop," plus

Albuquerque Academy Klezmer Camp
June 28-July 2, 2004
Set in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains on the lush 300+ acre campus of Albuquerque Academy, this weeklong workshop features Veretski Pass, including tsimbalist and accordianist Josh Horowitz, fiddler Cookie Segelstein, and Stu Brotman on bass. This year we are offering optional afternoon classes including 2 sessions of Yiddish dance, a lecture and slide show on 18th and 19th C. Yiddish life, and a film screening and discussion. You can also hike on our private wilderness tract and on the many acres of public land nearby. Or you may want to explore the cultural resources of the Albuquerque/Santa Fe area.
This class is open to anyone who can play simple tunes on their instrument. You do not have to read music or be familiar with Klezmer style. We encourage both solo players and existing ensembles to participate. Class will run daily from 9 AM until noon with optional afternoon programs as describged above. $210.
The week will conclude with a student concert, and a concert by Cookie, Josh and Stu on Friday evening.
This weeklong workshop could be a great start or end to a southwestern summer vacation or a vacation unto itself.

One of the best Klezmer/yiddish culture camps in North America is the annual "KlezKanada", held each years in the spectacular Laurentian mountains north of Montreal. Organized, in part, by the folks in Brave Old World, the program is always spectacular.
Events include lectures, a mini film festival, and of course, intensive workshops in singing, klezmer music, theatre, and dance. The "Kidz for Klez" program is also great. This is the best summer camp in the world (in fact, the event is hosted at a Jewish summer camp). Register early to get the best bunks.
Although most events start on Wednesday, the 25th, musicians should arrive this morning with the first workshops scheduled for this afternoon. Today is the day to arrive, get oriented, and get in some preliminary jamming.

Wednesday, July 6, 2005 at 5:30 P.M in the audtiorium of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, 15 East 16 St, New York, we will pay tribute to Eda Fasman Taub: the person, the writer, the cultural activist and friend.
The program will feature Itshe Goldberg of the Yiddishe Kultur and Susan Leviton, Beloved singer of Yiddish folksongs, and Readings from Eda's Poetry and Memoirs
All her life, Eda tried to ensure, both spiritually and financially, the survival of Yiddish language, literature and culture. Without her help dozens of Yiddish books would have gone unpublished. Her ideals and memory live on in the generous legacy she left for the organizations whose goals she held near and dear.
You are cordially invited. Admission Free.
It's the 10th anniversary of a great klezmer gathering. Musicians gather on the 21st, everyone else on the 24th.
