Richard Lenatsky at the Tonic, NYC, Jun 15

Treat your father ( or yourself) to a trip down memory lane this Father's Day, June 15, at the Klezmer Brunch at Tonic. Philadelphia area tenor, Richard Lenatsky, will perform oft-neglected folk and art songs made popular by such past luminaries of the Jewish music scene as Seymour Rechtzeit, Ben Bonus, Sidor Belarsky, and Jan Peerce. Let's keep the songs and the memory of the artists who performed them alive.

Richard will be accompanied on piano by well-known musician and Yiddish teacher (Uof Penn), Alexander (Sender) Botwinik. Show times are 1:30 and 3pm, $10 per show or $15 for both.

Who is Richard Lenatsky? Residing in West Chester, PA, I've been performing Yiddish art songs in the Phila. area and Amherst, MA, for about 10 years.

Wholesale Klezmer, Hadley, MA, Jun 18

The Porter Phelps Huntington Museum
Wednesday Folk Traditions concert series

Presents The Wholesale Klezmer Band in a concert of Yiddish dance music and Songs

Wednesday, June 18th, 2003 at 7 pm

130 River Drive (Route 47)
Hadley, Massachusetts
For information call 413-584-4699

Visit our calendar on-line to see other forthcoming events: www.WholesaleKlezmer.com/calendar.html

The museum grounds are open for picnicking before the concert starting at 5 pm. Bring blankets or lawn chairs if you like (the museum has chairs for about 80 people.) If it looks like it might rain, call the museum at 413-584-4699 to see if we are rescheduling.

This will be our first appearance at Wednesday Folk Traditions since the release of our most recent album, "Sing for Peace, Dance for Joy." And we've added new material to our repertoire even since the release of the album.

At the June 18th concert we will be debuting two songs about our relationship to money-- one is a updated old Yiddish vaudeville song, a biting satire about the corrupting effects of money, and the second, it's antidote, is a melodic comparison of money used for good or for selfish purposes. As usual, we'll be using subtitles and other means for making sure that the non-Yiddish speakers in our audience will understand everything we're singing about.

Directions:

  1. From Interstate 91, take the Route 9, Northampton exit.
  2. Take Route 9 East across the Connecticut River to the intersection of Route 47 (about 1/2 mile).
  3. Go left on Route 47 approximately 1.6 miles.
  4. The museum is on the left.

Musical Shabbat in Chicago, IL, Jun 20

Michael Meltzer and Michael Rubin (M&M) will be leading an All Music Shabbat Service this Friday starting at 8PM (yes, really at 8PM). WHEN: This Friday, June 20 at 8.00 p.m. WHERE: Makom Shalom, 637 S. Dearborn in Chicago (Printer's Row) QUESTIONS? Call 312-913-9030 or e-mail merubin@attbi.com or michaelmeltzer@sbcglobal.net Often we think of song as something we do in between the prayers, instead of the song or chant BEING our prayer to HaShem. When we are able to join together with this kavannah, it can be a deep and powerful experience for the entire chevrah. This Shabbos, we invite Makom members and guests to open up in sweet surrender with our hearts, minds, and voices. This is the second of three musical shabboses in the next three months, as we build our foundation of joy and deep connection. Please join us for this very special evening of heartfelt prayer. Bring any rhythm instruments and get ready to elevate your soul!

Albuquerque Academy Klezmer Camp, New Mexico

The Albuquerque Academy Klezmer Camp
Jun 23 -27
Albuquerque, NM

Set in the foothills of the Sandia mountains on the lush 300+ acre campus of Albuquerque Academy, this weeklong workshop features internationally acclaimed tsimbalist and accordianist Josh Horowitz, from the group Budowitz, and renowned Holocaust educator and fiddler Cookie Segelstein. Following mornings of music, you can hike on our private wilderness tract or on the many acres of public land nearby. Or explore the cultural resources of the Albuquerque/Santa Fe area.

This class is open to anyone who can play simple tunes on their instrument. You do not have to read music or be familiar with Klezmer style. We encourage both solo players and existing ensembles to participate. Class will run daily from 9 AM until noon. Informal practice and jam time possible in the afternoons. An optional Yiddish culture program will also be available. $200.

The week will conclude with a student concert and a concert by Cookie and Josh on Friday evening.

This weeklong workshop could be a great start or end to a southwestern summer vacation or a vacation unto itself.

For more information contact Danny Packer at (505) 828-3361, or packer@aa.edu. To register, contact the Albuquerque Academy Summer session at (505) 858-8811.

Although we are not setting up any formal arrangements for housing, we can offer a bit of informal advice. In addition, the school has a rustic cabin, located in the foothills of the beautiful Sandia Mountains, a few minutes drive from the main campus. Call about this if you're interested.

The Klezical Tradition, Kent, CT, Jun 28

The Klezical Tradition in Kent, CT, Jun 28

June 28 at 7:00 We open the Kent Connecticut Music Festival. For these three concerts we'll have a slightly different sound as Adrianne Greenbaum will be featured on the wood flute playing some of her "new" tunes from FleytMuzik, accompanied by Brian Bender on piano and Roy Weisman on bass. Of course Brian will also play trombone throughout the evening! Of course TKT's core musicians Fraidy Katz and Walter Mamlok will be there to give that TKT tam! (For those asking "Where is Cookie?" she's out and about fiddling across the countryside and will return to us in August.) The exact location of the concert is unknown at present typing so please email me closer to the concert day if you plan to attend. Kent is located in beautiful Litchfield County. For further info: www.klezband.com.

Directions:

Kent is approximately 45 minutes north of Danbury on Route 7. Take Route 7 north of Danbury, through New Milford to the Bulls Bridge Inn, the first of only two traffic lights in Kent. Four miles north of the Inn there is a large field on the right, across from the Kent Greenhouse. Parking is in an adjacent field, also on the right. These are called the Kent Land Trust fields.

If you reach the second light in town, you've driven too far. If it is raining, make a left at this second traffic light at the intersection of Route 7 and Route 341, drive a quarter mile and take another left onto the grounds of the private Kent School, not the public Kent Center School. The address for The Kent School is Kent School Route 341, Kent, CT 06757 and therefore should get you close to the regular "sunshine" site as well!

It is forty-five minutes by car from Danbury. The fields open to the public by 6:00PM. The music starts at 7:00PM.

This is the second year we are running the course. Last year it was so popular every minute was relished by all. Book early as this is limited to 50 students. It is designed for various levels from people who want to start from scratch who may not know the Hebrew alphabet to those who are at intermediate level — and even above. The outstanding faculty are a privilege to work with. The course is led by Chayele Beer, of University College London and with the one and only Pesakh Fiszman of Columbia NY and Sonia Dratwa-Pinkusowitz of the Martin Buber Institute Brussels, they make a fantastic team.

Full Rate: £295, Student Rate: £195
(Scholarships are available for those unable to afford the full fee; please don't hesitate to ask about these)
